Chapter 89

Kevin woke up at 7 o'clock to the smell of breakfast cooking. He opened his eyes to see himself laying in bed alone. He got up and pulled a pair of jeans on. Then he walked into the kitchen to find Janel making burritos. He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Morning beautiful," he said as he rested his head on my shoulder.

I shivered as I felt his breath against my neck.

"Morning Boo," I said, smiling as I felt him gently rubbing my stomach.

"What are you doing up so early?" he asked.

"Believe me, I'd still be in bed snuggled close to you if it weren't for these babies making me hungry," I said.

"Maybe we can go back to bed later," Kevin said as he began kissing my neck.

I smiled as I turned the stove off.

"Later," I said as I turned around and kissed him passionately.

Then I pulled away from him. I grabbed the pan, and put the potatoes and eggs into the bowl.

"It's ready," I said as I set the bowl on the table.

"Smells delicious," he said as he sat down across from me.

"Thank you," I said as we served ourselves.

Both of us sat quietly eating our food and enjoying the morning together.

Afterwards Kevin and I went back into our room. He laid down and I climbed in next to him. I rested my head on his bare chest, closing my eyes and listening to him breathe. I wrapped my arms around his waist and he took my hand, intertwining our fingers.

Kevin laid there, no longer tired. So instead he just watched her sleep. He leaned forward and kissed her head.

He breathed in deeply, smelling her strawberry shampoo. He smiled, knowing that she still used the same shampoo. For as long as he could remember, she had used the same one. And that smell always reminded him of when they were children. She'd come over right after she had taken a shower and sit on the bed next to him. He loved that smell then, and still loved it now.

Kevin was amazed at how quickly they had grown up. One minute they were children, and now they were having children of their own. He couldn't believe he was actually going to be a dad. He was excited and scared at the same time. Scared that he wouldn't be the dad that his dad had been for him. If he could be at least half the man his father was, then he would be happy. He just didn't want to let Janel down, or his children.

He laid there a while longer just thinking about what the future had in store for him and Janel.

At about 10:45 Kevin began to gently rub Janel's back getting her to wake up. Her doctor's appointment was at 12:15, and he knew it would take her a while to get up.

I felt Kevin's soothing touch on me as I laid there with my eyes closed. I realized that our fingers were still entwined.

"Pumpkin, it's time to wake up," he said softly. Then he kissed the top of my head.

I opened my eyes and looked up at him. He smiled as he leaned forward and placed his lips on mine.

I kissed him and then rested my head on his chest again.

"How did you sleep?" he asked.

"Too good," I replied. "I could still sleep longer."

"I know you could. I didn't want to wake you, but your appointment is in an hour or so," he said.

"It's okay Boo," I said. "So how did you sleep?"

"I didn't," he said.

"You didn't?" I questioned.

"No," he answered.

"Why not?" I asked.

"I wasn't really tired anymore, so I did some thinking," he said.

"Is everything okay?" I asked.

"Yeah, everything's fine," he said reassuringly.

Then we just laid there for a little longer. Finally I decided it was time for us to get ready.

We changed and then headed to the doctor's office. We waited in the waiting room for about 15 minutes when we were called back.

"Hi you two," the nurse said as she walked in.

"Hi," we said.

"So how are you feeling?" she asked as she checked me over.

"Just fine," I replied.

"That's good," she said, once she was finished. "And now I'm sure you two are dying to have the results and the ultrasound."

Kevin and I quickly shook our heads yes.

"The suspense is beginning to kill us," I said.

She smiled at us. "Well here is the video of the ultrasound," she said as she handed us a videocassette.

Then she grabbed a manila folder.

"The pictures of the ultrasound are in here," she said as she gave it to us. "Along with the results."

Kevin and I smiled at each other.

"Are you two hoping for boys or girls?" the nurse asked.

"It doesn't really matter to us," Kevin said.

"Yeah, as long as my children are healthy," I said.

"Well I wish the best for you," she said.

"Thanks," I said as I hugged her.

Kevin held the video and manila folder tightly in his hands. Then we walked out and sat in the car.

"Do we want to open it now? Or at the town house? Or at home?" Kevin asked excitedly.

"Oh, I don't know," I said, trying to decide. "I really really want to know, but if we do it at home then we can tell everyone right away."

"Yeah," Kevin agreed. "I think we should wait. That way we'll be in our own home."

Then Kevin started the car and we left.

We walked in and sat on the couch. We placed the folder and video on the coffee table in front of us. Then we just stared at the folder.

"I want to know," I said.

"So do I," Kevin said.

Neither one of us moved to grab it, just stared at it.

"We can watch the ultrasound," Kevin suggested.

"Yeah, that's a good idea," I said.

Kevin got up and put it into the VCR. Then he sat back down, putting his arm around me.

We smiled as we saw the babies appear on the screen.

"Look, there's a head," I said.

"Yeah, and a little arm," Kevin said.

"And there's our other child," I said happily.

He bent down and kissed my head.

Then we sat there watching that ultrasound, god knows how many times. Afterwards, we began to stare at the folder again.

"Why don't I put this away, so we're not tempted to open it," I said as I picked it up.

"Sounds good to me," he said as he followed me down the hall.

I tucked it away safely into my suitcase. Then I zipped it up and put it back in the corner.

"Okay, now that's out of the way, I'm going to take a little dip in the pool," I said. "Care to join me?"

"I'd love to, but I have to call Brain and let him know what's going on tomorrow," he said.

"Oh okay," I said.

I changed and then went out to the pool.

Kevin grabbed the phone and sat down.

"B-Rok here."

"Hi cuz."

"Oh hey Kev, what's up?"

"Just calling to tell you that our flight will be coming in at noon."

"Okay, I'll make sure to leave in plenty of time."

"Thanks Bri. So have you talked to Lauren?"

"Yeah, she's got everything ready for tomorrow."

"Good, cause I want this to be a welcome home Janel will never forget."

"It will be. Shorty will definitely be surprised. By the way, how is Shorty?"

"She's good. Ready to come home I think."

"And the baby?"

Kevin smiled. "Well we went to the doctor today and she's just fine. But we do have news for you and the rest of the gang."

"What?!"

"Can't tell you yet. You'll just have to wait."

"You know I hate it when you do that!"

"I know."

"So you're still not going to tell me?!"

"Nope."

"Fine then Kevin."

"I'll see you tomorrow cuz."

"Bye cuz, have a safe trip."

"We will. Bye."

Kevin hung up and then called Lauren.

"Hello."

"Hi Lauren, it's me Kevin."

"Oh hi Kevin. How are you and my baby sis?"

"We're perfect. And we're coming home tomorrow."

"What time?"

"Noon."

"Okay, I'll make sure I go over to your house early and set everything up."

"Thanks Lauren for doing this for me."

"You're welcome Kevin."

"Well I better let you go now. I'm sure I interrupted you and Howie."

"As a matter of fact, you did."

"Sorry about that, and I'll see you tomorrow."

"Okay, bye."

Kevin hung up and then went back to their room. He began packing the rest of his and Janel's clothes.

I walked into my room and Kevin was neatly folding clothes and packing them into a suitcase. He had the music blaring, so he didn't even realize that I had come in.

He was sitting on the ground with his back against the bed, facing the wall. I quietly grabbed some clothes off the bed and then went to take my shower.

Once I came out Kevin was laying on the bed listening to radio with his eyes closed. I smiled and then walked over to him. I kissed him gently on the lips. He opened his eyes and smiled at me. Then he pulled me onto the bed with him.

"What were you doing?" I asked.

"Packing, so you wouldn't have to tonight. And so we could leave on time tomorrow," he said.

"Thank you," I said.

"Uh huh," he said as he kissed my head.

"So how was swimming?" he asked.

"Good," I said. "It was relaxing."

"That's good," he said.

"Did you get a hold of Brian?" I asked.

"Yeah, he'll pick us up tomorrow," he said.

"Oh okay," I said.

Then Kevin grabbed the remote to the radio and began to turn it up.

"I love this song," he said as he moved closer to me.

I closed my eyes as I held him tightly.

Then he began to sing.

To really love a woman
To understand her - you gotta know her deep inside
Hear every thought - see every dream
N' give her wings when she wants to fly
Then when you find yourself lyin' helpless in her arms
Ya know ya really love a woman

When you love a woman you tell her that she's really wanted
When you love a woman you tell her that she's the one
Cuz she needs somebody to tell her that it's gonna last forever
So tell me have you ever really - really really ever loved a woman?

To really love a woman
Let her hold you - til ya know how she needs to be touched
You've gotta breathe her - really taste her
Til you can feel her in your blood
N' when you can see your unborn children in her eyes
Ya know ya really love a woman

Chorus

You got to give her some faith - hold her tight
A little tenderness - gotta treat her right
She will be there for you, takin' good care of you
Ya really gotta love your woman...
