Chapter 39

I got up and the house was completely empty. So I went downstairs to see if there was a message for me. I went to the refrigerator for a glass of milk when I found the note on the refrigerator.

Lily & Kris:

Mom went with Heather shopping, the boys are at Jerald's, and Tim, Jerald and I are at the cabin getting things set up. Whenever you two are up and ready, just come to the cabin and we can eat lunch there. And then maybe we can ride one of the quads.

Love you both!

I sighed as I realized that it was only Kristin and I in the house. What was my dad thinking leaving the two of us alone? Obviously, he wasn't thinking at all because this was definitely not a good idea. Especially since over the last two days we've been having a harder time getting along with each other. I've tried telling myself to just ignore her, let it slide or just to take deep breaths, but lately she's been pissing me off to no end.

I poured myself a glass of milk and then sat down at the table, when she walked in.

She ignored me and went straight for the refrigerator. She immediately read that note that was left.

"Ugh…" she said, exasperated. "I'm stuck with you."

"Feeling's mutual," I replied. "I'd much rather spend the day alone, then with you."

"Good, then that's what you'll do," Kristin said.

I smiled. "Nice try Kristin. But I don't think Dad would be so happy with you if he found out that you left me here all by myself."

"Kevin would understand," she said.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Fine! I'll take you!" she yelled.

"Thought so," I replied.

Then she began slamming the kitchen cabinets as she got out what she need to make breakfast.

"Hope that makes you feel better," I said, as I went upstairs to get dressed.

Kristin then slammed the pan onto the counter. "It does!"

I laughed as I heard her yell. She got pissed so easily.

I closed my door and then picked out some clothes to wear. Once I had finished getting dressed, I did my hair, putting it up into a bun with little pieces coming down and framing my face.

"I'm ready!" I yelled as I walked out into the hallway.

"Well I'm not!" I heard Kristin scream, from somewhere in the house.

"Hurry up! I want to see my dad!" I yelled. Then I went downstairs and decided to watch TV, while I waited for Kristin to finish getting ready.

About 15 minutes later I saw Kristin hurriedly walking out the door. "Let's go you little brat! Or I'm leaving without you!"

I quickly got up and shut the door behind me. When I walked out of the house, she was all ready buckled in and starting the car. I rushed over to the passenger's side and hopped in.

"Glad you made it in time before I left," Kristin said sarcastically, as she backed out of the driveway.

"No you're not. Quit with the lies," I said.

"You're right. I'm not happy that you're here!" she said angrily.

"Why? What did I ever do to you?" I questioned.

"You found Kevin and stole him from me, that's what you did," Kristin stated.

"First of all, he's my dad, which makes him mine too. Second of all, he found me because he wanted me back in his life. Just to make that clear for you," I said.

"Now let me make something clear for you," she said. "You are never going to be apart of this family. No matter how hard you try, I will not accept another woman's child to be mine and Kevin's."

"I would never want someone like you to be my mother!" I yelled as tears began to fall from my eyes. "I hate you with every being in me! I hope you die!"

"I hate you too!" she screamed at me.

Then all of a sudden I saw a truck coming straight for us.

"Kristin!" I screamed as I pointed out the window.

She faced the window, and whispered, "Oh God."

Then she quickly swerved, trying to avoid hitting the truck. But before I knew what had happened, everything around me went black.

"Kevin! Phone for you!" yelled Jerald from the patio of the cabin.

"Okay!" yelled Kevin. He and Tim set the table down; then they both went up to patio.

"Who is it?" Kevin asked quietly before he took the phone from Jerald.

Jerald just shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know, he said that he was a police officer."

Kevin looked at Jerald puzzled as he answered the phone.

"Hello," he said, uneasily.

"Mr. Kevin Richardson?" the man asked.

"This is he," Kevin replied. "May I ask who this is?"

"I'm Officer Strickman," he said.

"What can I do for you?" asked Kevin.

"Do you know Ms. Kristin Willits?" Officer Strickman asked.

"Yes, she's my fiancée," Kevin said as his heart began to beat faster. "Is something wrong?"

"And Lily Anne Richardson is…" he began.

"My daughter," Kevin interrupted. "Is everything okay? What happened?"

"They've been in a car wreck," Officer Strickman said.

"What?! Are they okay?" Kevin asked worriedly. "What happened?"

"They've been taken to the emergency room," he replied.

"What? How? I mean…" Kevin began rambling.

"A driver of the other vehicle fell asleep at the wheel and swerved into the other lane, in which she was driving," the officer explained.

"Oh God no," Kevin said as he dropped the phone.

He felt as though his world had just come shattering down.

Jerald quickly picked up the phone and continued talking with the officer, while Tim helped Kevin to sit down.

"Please let them be okay," Kevin prayed silently.

Once Jerald hung up, he went over to Kevin, making sure he was okay.

"Bro, are you okay?" he asked.

"Umm…yeah, I'm fine. We have to go. Now," Kevin said as he got up and rushed over to the truck.

"I'll drive," Tim said as he got in.

Kevin and Jerald quickly got in on the other side. As they took off, Jerald called his mom, his wife, Heather, and Brian letting them know what had happened.

Kevin sat there staring straight ahead, trying desperately not to cry. In his mind he was telling himself that they were fine, that there was nothing to be worried about. He kept repeating this thought in his mind, but it didn't help him much, he was still scared.

"Drive faster," Kevin told Tim.

"I'm driving as fast as I can, we don't need to get in a car wreck on the way over there though," Tim said.

"Just get there," Kevin said.

As soon as Kevin saw the hospital building, his heart began beating faster. "Just drop me off," Kevin said.

"Okay," Tim said.

He pulled up to the front, letting Jerald and Kevin get out. The moment Kevin's feet touched the cement, he took off running.

"Kevin!" yelled Jerald. He tried to quickly run after him, but people were constantly coming in and out of the hospital, making it difficult for him to catch up to Kevin.

"Where are they? Where is my daughter and fiancée?" Kevin yelled as he made his way to the front desk.

"Sir, please calm down," the nurse said as she watched as this man came towards her like a raging bull.

"No! I will not calm down until I know where they are!" Kevin said angrily as he pounded his fist on the counter. "I want to know right now!"

Then he turned and kicked the chair, sending it flying across the room. The nurse jumped back as she heard the sudden bang.

The next thing Kevin knew, some man was holding him.

"Let go of me!" roared Kevin as he struggled to break free.

"Sir, I need you to calm down before you hurt yourself or someone else," the man said.

"Officer!" Jerald said as he ran up to Kevin. "He's my brother, I'll take care of him."

"Okay," the officer said as he slowly released Kevin.

"Kevin, what are you doing?" Jerald asked as he put his face in front of Kevin's.

"They won't tell me where Lily is," Kevin said as tears began to fill his eyes.

"We'll find her Kev, just calm down. Yelling at these people is not going to help anyone, okay?" Jerald asked.

"Yeah, you're right," Kevin said. "Sorry," he mumbled as he looked around at everyone.

Jerald and Kevin went back up to the front desk. "We'd like to know where Lily Richardson and Kristin Willits are," Jerald said.

"And you are?" the nurse asked.

"Father and fiancé," Kevin replied.

"Okay, I'll page the doctor," the nurse said. "Just have a seat, it might be a few minutes."

"Thank you," Jerald said as he led Kevin to a chair.

Kevin sat down, wiping away his tears with the back of his hand.

"Any news?" Tim asked as he walked up to his two brothers.

"No, not yet," answered Jerald.

Then the three of them just sat there in silence.

"Mr. Richardson?" the doctor called, a few minutes after they had been sitting there.

"That's me!" Kevin said as he quickly got up, walking towards the doctor.

"And what can I do for you?" the doctor asked.

Kevin stood there amazed by what the doctor had just said. "What do you mean? I want to know about my little girl!"

"She was in a car accident, right?" the doctor asked, hesitantly.

"Yes," Kevin said exasperatedly.

The doctor looked at his chart and then back up at Kevin.

"I'm sorry, but…"

"No, don't even say it," Kevin said as his heart began pounding out of his chest and tears stung his eyes.

"We couldn't save her. She died when she arrived," the doctor informed Kevin.

"No!" cried Kevin. "Not my little girl!"

Then he fell to his knees, with tears falling from his eyes.

Jerald and Tim immediately dropped to Kevin's side.

"Not…Lily," Kevin choked out as he cried into his hands.
