Chapter 42

Kevin walked out and went to take his shower. Then he went downstairs and grabbed something to eat.

"Sleep well?" Ann asked.

"Yeah, it was a nice nap," Kevin said.

"You're leaving again?" Ann asked.

"Yeah, Kristin should be back in her room by now," Kevin said. "And just to let you know, Lily will be down for dinner."

"Okay, that's good," Ann said.

"I have to go now, but I'll see you later tonight," Kevin said as he hugged his mom.

"Bye Kev," she said.

Kevin went back to the hospital and into Kristin's room. Before he entered, he prayed that maybe she was awake waiting for him.

He walked in and his heart broke. There was Kristin, still lying there in the hospital bed sleeping. He went over to her and kissed her on the forehead.

"I'm here again," Kevin said.

He then studied her face, noticing that her coloring seemed to be coming back. She wasn't as pale as she had been the previous day. He kissed her again and then sat down.

He pulled another chair over and rested his feet up on that. Then he took out his notebook and began jotting down ideas. He didn't know exactly what he was writing, but he had to keep himself occupied somehow.

While he was writing he heard a moan. He quickly looked up towards Kristin. He stared at her for a few minutes, but there was nothing. He then went back to his writing. As soon as he put his head down, he heard the same noise again. This time though, he got up and went over to her.

"Kristin," he whispered.

Then he watched as her eyes began to flutter open.

He didn't know whether to run out and grab a nurse or doctor, or just stay right where he was so that Kristin would know he was there for her. He decided on the latter.

"Kristin," he whispered again.

Kristin opened her eyes, but the bright light came flooding in, so she quickly closed them. After lying there for a couple minutes, with her eyes still closed, Kristin could hear someone calling her name.

This time instead of quickly opening her eyes, she slowly opened them, allowing her eyes to get adjusted to the bright lights. Once they were completely open she noticed a tall figure hovering over her.

"Kristin, sweetheart," Kevin whispered softly as tears came to his eyes.

Kristin focused on the person in front of her.

"Kevin?" she choked out.

Kevin began crying as he heard her whisper his name.

"I'm right here," Kevin said as he kissed her on the forehead.

"Where am I?" she questioned.

"In the hospital," Kevin answered.

"Why?" she asked, confused.

"Cause you were in a car accident," Kevin said. Then he noticed the frightened look on her face. "But don't worry, you're okay now…everyone's okay."

Kristin began crying, thankful that she was still alive. "I love you Kevin."

"I love you too," Kevin said as he kissed her.

Once the two of them had stopped crying, Kevin went and found a doctor to check Kristin over. While the doctor examined Kristin, Kevin called his family.

Ann's House

My grandma had just called me down for dinner, so I reluctantly went downstairs. I only went cause I had promised my dad.

I went downstairs and everyone was seated at the table. Except for my cousins, they were seated at another table.

"Here Lily," my grandma said. "I served you a plate right here."

"Thank you," I said quietly as I sat down next to her.

I took my seat and then sat there quietly, picking at my food with my fork, just moving the food around.

In the middle of dinner, the phone rang and my grandma got up to answer it.

"Hello," she said. "Okay Kevin, calm down. I can't understand you."

I immediately began paying attention to what she was saying as soon as I heard my dad's name.

"Okay, we'll be there as soon as we can," my grandma said.

I couldn't tell whether it was good news or bad news. I held my breath, preparing for the worst.

Then my grandma hung up the phone and turned to us.

"It's Kristin!" she exclaimed. "She's awake!"

Everyone at the table began cheering, as I slowly let out the breath I had been holding in.

"Kevin wants us to go down there now," she said.

"Okay, lets go," Uncle Jerald said.

Everyone got up and began getting ready to go. I just sat there watching everyone.

"Come on Lily, let's go," my grandma said as she headed towards the door.

"I'm not going," I said.

"What?" she asked surprised, as she turned around.

"I'm not going," I repeated.

"What? Why not, sweetheart?" she questioned. "You have to, we're all leaving."

"No, I can't," I said as I finally got up from my seat. I began making my way over towards the stairs.

"Come on, let's go," she said.

"No," I said as I shook my head. "I'll be fine alone, just go."

"I can't leave you here, I'm sure that your dad wants to see you," my grandma said.

"I'm not going," I said. Then I turned and ran upstairs, locking the door as I shut it behind me.

"Lily, please come out," my grandma asked as she stood at my door.

"No," I said. "I'll be fine, just go."

Ann sighed reluctantly. "Fine, but if anything should happen you call, right away."

"I'll be fine," I repeated.

Ann then went downstairs and locked up the house. Then she joined the rest of the family in Tim's vehicle.

"Where's Lily?" Tim asked.

"In her room, she refuses to come out," Ann answered.

"Oh, okay," Tim replied.

Then he took off, quickly going to the hospital so that they could see Kristin.

When Ann walked into Kristin's room, she saw Kevin sitting next to Kristin, holding her hand and talking to her quietly.

Kristin smiled as she saw Ann. Ann then moved closer to them, carefully hugging Kristin.

"Hi sweetheart," she said. "How are you feeling?"

"So, so," she replied.

"So are you hurting anywhere?" Ann asked.

"Um…not really. Although, I have this nasty bruise on my forehead a few on my arms and a broke wrist," Kristin said. "I just feel tired, sort of worn out."

"Too much sleeping, huh?" Ann said, smiling.

"Yeah, that's it," Kristin said.

Then everyone else entered the room, giving Kristin hugs and kisses, and telling her how glad they were that she was okay. After a while, they all left, leaving only Kevin and Ann in the room with her.

"So where is Lily?" Kristin asked worriedly.

"She's back at home," Ann replied.

"Why?" Kevin asked.

"She refused to come with us," Ann said. "She locked herself in your room."

"But she's okay?" Kristin asked.

"Yes, she's fine," Ann said.

"She didn't get hurt in the accident?" Kristin asked, quietly.

"No," Kevin answered quickly.

Kristin looked at Kevin puzzled. She didn't understand why he had answered to quick, almost angrily.

"Kev, what's wrong?" Kristin asked softly.

"Nothing, we'll talk later," Kevin said.

"Okay," Kristin agreed.

"So why did she refuse to come?" Kevin questioned.

"I don't know, she just didn't want to come," Ann said. "She almost seemed frightened."

"Frightened?" Kristin asked puzzled.

"Yes, every time we mention coming to the hospital, she gets that way," Kevin said.

"Oh," Kristin said quietly, wondering if Lily was afraid of her.

"Well I'm going to go home now," Ann said. "Are you coming with me?"

"No, I'm staying here with Kris," Kevin said.

"No, you're not," Kristin said. "You go home with your Mom and get some sleep."

"I'll be fine here," Kevin said. "I can sleep right here."

"No," Kristin said. "You need a good nights rest, I can see it in your eyes. I'll be fine for the night."

Kevin sighed. "But I just want to stay with you."

"You can come back tomorrow, but for now you need to go home," Kristin said. "And take care of Lily."

"All right," Kevin agreed. He then got up and kissed Kristin. "I love you."

"Love you too Kev," she whispered in his ear.

Ann then hugged Kristin. "Thanks for making him come home."

"You're welcome," Kristin said.

Then Ann and Kevin walked out of Kristin's hospital room.
