How to Make a One Yen Coin Float
The Japanese one yen coin may seem feeble, but it has a great power. While most coins sink in water, the one yen coin has the remarkable abilty to be set afloat on the surface of the water.
Materials
- 2 one yen coins (one is ok too)
- a wide container filled with water
- tissue
How to make float
- Step 1: Drop a one yen coin into the water. Notice how it sinks to the bottom as any coin would be expected.
- Step 2: This time, take a piece of tissue and lay the other one yen coin on top of it. Place it gently in the water. The tissue should soak up with water, but it should still be on the surface of the water holding up the coin.
- Step 3: Carefully remove the tissue by slowly pushing it down into the water. If you move it too quickly, you can create a ripple, which might cause the coin to capsize and sink. If you do this correctly, though, the yen will still be afloat.
- Step 4: Then carefully remove the tissue from under the surface of the water. After this, you will have two coins in your container: one will be under the water, the other will be on the surface. You have two coin that are exactly the same, but only one floats.
