Katakana: Vowels Katakana vowels work just like the hiragana vowels except for one difference. They are not usually used to extend sounds. Instead, there is a symbol called the long vowel mark which acts just like a replica of the preceding vowel. In horizontal writting it is written horizontally, and in vertical writting, it is written vertically.
