The Earliest Public Electric Railway still in Operation
On Wednesday 4th August 1999 the 116th aniversary of the railway was
celebrated with a special train to mark the recognition of the railway's
unique status . The Guinness Book of Records had awarded the railway a
certificate acknowledging it as ' The Earliest Public Electric Railway
Still in Operation'.

Bernard Volk , the grandson of Magnus Volk , and his Wife Margaret
, dressed in Victorian costume , posed for photographs . Then at 12 Noon
, the time the railway officially opened on this day 116 years before ,
the train left the Aquarium Station driven by Mrs Volk .
