Electric Tram No 3

When No 3 was running with open platforms colour photography was but a dream...... No, the THS has not created an overnight miracle. Instead, we show a photo of Lester Hopkins' superb model in 1/32 scale of Roslyn No 1 running on his layout at the 2000 Model Railway Show in Christchurch almost exactly 100 years after the line opened on 23rd October, 1900.

No 3 is 1 of 3 trams purchased in 1900 for New Zealand's first electric tramline which ran along the hilltops of Dunedin for 36 years. Control of the line passed to The Dunedin City Corporation in 1922 and No 3 was then transferred to the main Dunedin system. After the truck was regauged to standard gauge (the Roslyn line was 3' 6" gauge) and the body stripped of seats and doors, the tram saw another 20 years of life as a maintenance car.

Nos 1 & 2 were replaced in normal service by 2 boxcars similar to No 11 and were held in reserve until the line closed in 1936.

No 1 is now in the possession of the Otago Settlers Museum.
