Backup midseason 2003-2004 and occasional starter when Giles got injured, but minors 2005-2006. Lost via FA before 2007 season. 2004 Acquisitions Chone Figgins - acquired in May 2004 draft. Played at utility spot and main back up at 2B, 3B, SS, and OF in 2004. Mainly played SS in 2005, but lost SS eligibility in 2006. In 2006 in April main Utility player... May-June main 2nd basemen... then become main 3B... and sporadic OF... ok he plays everywhere. D'Angelo Jimenez - acquired in Oswalt/Santana April 24th, 2004 deal. Backup 2004. minors 2005-2006. Brandon Phillips - acquired pretty much as a throw in in the April 29th, 2004 Zito/Bay deal. Prospect status died in 2005, but in 2006 bounced back and frequently bounced back and forth from the majors and minors with Gile's struggles. Finally traded in ____ deal Chase Utley - acquired in July 1st, 2004 trade for Looper/Rogers. Traded July 26th, 2004 for picks. STUPID TRADE!!! 2005 Acquisitions Tadahito Iguchi - Acquired from FA for 8 million. Bench warmer 2005. Traded for picks on August 13th, 2005. Howie Kendrick - Drafted in April 2005. Came up as a bench player in 2006. Starter in 2007- Analysis - Jeff Kent supplied much needed power in the initial year of the league, but was traded when Adam Kennedy was acquired as Kennedy was thought to be a good starter candidate. Little did I know that Marcus Giles who was thought to be a failed prospect when I picked him up for Hernandez would turn into a top 5 2nd basemen when healthy. Unfortunately as the next two seasons proved (2004-2005) as long as Giles is my starter, Boston will need a quality backup 2nd baseman. The main reason 2004 was so unsuccessful was because of the lack of depth at 2B, neither Kennedy nor Jimenez proved to be a good backup. Fortunately 2004 gave a huge surprise in Chone Figgins who has been very adequate backing up Giles and starting everywhere else on the field too when a stolen base is needed. Utley I should have kept... I figured their was a possibility he could be a bust but that proved out to be wrong.. |
