| 2002 Eric Chavez - Drafted in 2nd round of original draft. Traded for Beltre/Gerut/Pena before 2004 season. Starter 2002-2003 Melvin Mora - Acquired for 975k in a trade. Traded away in the huge Santana/Oswalt deal on April 24th. Backup 2002-2003 BJ Upton - Acquired in 2002 draft - 1st round. Played a couple of months in 2004 as a SS but 2005-2006 season was in the minors not only in fantasy but in reality too. 2004 Adrian Beltre - Acquired for Chavez before 2004. Traded on April 10th, 2006 for Huber and picks. Was amazing as a starter in 2004, and began the year of 2005 as the starter, but was on the bench and minors thereafter with struggles. Ty Wigginton - Acquired on June 19th for Travis Harper. Traded in March 5th, 2005 for Villareal. Backup 2004 Morgan Ensberg - Acquired for Wilkerson/Lowe on August 15th. Backup in late 2004. With Beltre's struggles became starter for majority of 2005- 2006 Mark Teahen - Acquired for Mench on January 30th. Backup first month of 2006. Minors thereafter. Analysis: Boston has had three starters at 3rd base through four years. Even so this position has had little turnover through the years in comparison to the other positions. This has always been a position of strength for Boston, Chavez was great through his tenure. Beltre had an unbelievable season in 2004, (although he was horrendous in 2005) and Ensberg continued the tradition with a breakout season of his own in 2005. Either Beltre, Ensberg, or Figgins (who has qualified for 3rd base the past few years) will be counted on for a successful 2006 season. |
