Juan Acevedo - Saved Boston's season by taking over Matt Anderson's job in Detroit in 2002. Unfortunately went to New York the next year and couldn't take the pressure in a setup role.
Mike Adams - Supposed to be a closer in 2005 in Milwaukee performed badly in a couple of save opportunities then not only was demoted from his closer role but was demoted to the minors.
Matt Anderson... drafted as a top young closer, but has saved three games since league started
Luis Ayala - As a rookie in 2003 become pretty much the closer the last month of the season. Since then every year has been rumored that he would be at least sharing the closer role. Unfortunately he has only had 3 saves since 2003.
Danys Baez - Just lost his job by being traded to LA... then went to Atlanta who quickly got Bob Wickman. Then instead of signing a FA deal with a team needing a closer he went where the money was and became a setup man for the Orioles.
Rod Beck - Amazingly comes out of retirement to become a replacement closer for for the Padres when Hoffman gets hurt in 2003. Then falls apart in 2004.
Armando Benitez - After acquiring him became mister injury. Finally lost his job in 2007 when he was traded to the Marlins.
Brian Bruney - Closer of the future in Arizona. Got some opportunities in 2005 but didn't make the best of them.
Jesus Colome - Has been touted as the Devil Rays "closer of the future" for years now... Boston's still waiting for him to get his chance.
Francisco Cordero - Great closer first few years with the team... then BLEW UP in 2006. Main reason why my team was so desperate to get 6th place in 2006. Finally won back his job with the Brewers.
Jason Frasor - Was closer a while on the Blue Jays in 2004, but almost as soon as Boston acquired him he lost his job.
Dustin Hermanson - Amazing year in 2005, then suffered a back injury that limited effectiveness and Jenks stole his job.
Bobby Jenks - Was a closer of the future when Boston acquired him. Didn't do too well and was traded, then took over the closing job from Hermanson right after Boston acquired Hermanson.
Todd Jones - Two years before Boston signed him he had a career high 42 saves. The year before Boston signed him he had a respectable 13 saves. The 3 years Boston had him he only saved 3 games. The year after Boston trades him he saves 40 saves again... Does this guy just hate me?
Scott Linebrink - With Hoffman becoming a FA in 2006 Linebrink was supposed to take over the closer role... then San Diego resigned Hoffman.
Braden Looper - Kept winning and losing the job in 2002 then in 2003 lost his job to Urbina the last month of the season.
Demaso Marte - Has been rumored to take over Chicago's closer spot for what seems like all of eternity, but blows every chance.
Jose Mesa - Acquired in FA before 2006. Could not win job as Colorado's closer.
Vladimir Nunez - Had a wonderful year as the setup man for the Marlins in 2001 then in the middle of 2002 won the closer role. Bombed out of the closer role after that.
Troy Percival - Closer for a decade then when traded to Boston began to decline. In 2005 his career died.
Scot Stewart - Saved 17 games in 2002 as a primary closer for the Expos. Hasn't saved a single game since.
Scott Strickland - 9 saves at end of 2001. Expected to be primary closer of the Expos for years to come but did not save a single game in 2002 and saved 2 games in 2003. Since then has undergone Tommy John surgery.
Ugueth Urbina - Underneath the definition of a roller coaster you will find a picture of Urbina. In 2002 he dominated and gave Boston 40 saves. 2003 he put up great save numbers while in Texas in reality but was then traded at the end of the year to Florida where he was demoted to a setup role until the final month of the season. 2004 he was supposed to be Detroit's closer and he had an acceptable year... that is until his mother was kidnapped and he missed the last couple of months in the season. 2005 he was suspected to be a setup man behind Percival. Then Percival got injured and Urbina put up quality numbers in his abscence. Stupidly when Percival came back from the DL the Tigers traded Urbina to the Phillies who put him back in a setup role. Soon after the trade Percival suffered another injury that may keep him out of 2006. (see Percival) Going into FA Urbina was looking for another closing job in 2006 but is now sitting in a Venezulan prison charged with attempted murder. Fortunately I got a 2nd round pick because he left via FA that year.
