2002 Nomar Garciaparra - Original Red Sox. Traded in midseason trade for Durazo/Guzman Starter in 2002 Omar Vizquel - Acquired in 12th round of original draft. Traded for Robison Cano before 2003 season. Part of bench of 2002. Shane Halter - Acquired in 13th round of original draft. Traded for Frank Thomas before 2003 season. Absolutely an abysmal bench player. Jose Hernandez - Acquired in 15th round of original draft. Traded for Marcus Giles in 2002 midseason. Played well in frequent playing time in 2002. Christian Guzman - Acquired from Nomar trade in midseason 2002. Starter after Nomar left, played often in 2003 but in 2004 was mainly in minors. 2005 spent entire season in minors. Has become a complete non-factor. Freddie Sanchez - Original Red Sox. Not a great prospect but in 2005 became a decent backup in real life (didn't make it to the majors in this league though) and in 2006 really broke out and became a versatile member of my bench and often started. (also qualified at 2B and 3B) 2003 Alex Cintron - Acquired for Kent before 2003 season. Traded for Lugo before 2004 season. Not acquired to be starter but became starter in 2003. Ramon Vazquez - Acquired for Scott Spiezio before 2003 season. Traded for Juan Uribe. Bench player 2003. 2004 Julio Lugo - Acquired for Cintron before 2004 season. Primarily a backup in 2004 but played a lot at 2nd base with Giles's injury, and split time with Figgins in 2005. 2006 with Figgins losing eligibility at SS Lugo became primary SS with Freddie Sanchez splitting some time. Juan Uribe - Acquired for Vazquez before 2004. Primary starter in 2004. Backup in 2005. Stephen Drew - Drafted in 1st round 2004. Made it to the majors in midseason 2006 and instantly became my starter. Analysis - Shortstop has never been a position of strength for Boston since Nomar was traded. Guzman was expected to be a starter but he fizzled. Cintron proved servicible in 2003 but fortunately I traded him before his subpar 2004. Since then Uribe proved to be a quality starter in 2004 and Lugo was decent in 2005, although Figgins took a large number of starts at SS in 2005. Lugo did good for the first half of 2006 and Drew then came up and performed well the rest of the way. Ideally with Drew up I have this position settled for years to come. |
