+Run Lola Run+
(written: october 1999)

I fell completely in love with this brilliant artistic film from the first moment that I laid eyes on it! It is a film rich with color, sound, creativity, and non-stop exhilaration!

Forget that this is a German film with english subtitles, originally titled Lola Rennt. And, you do forget, because this is one foreign film that stands on its own as a whole. It does not matter that it is not in English because believe it or not, it makes no difference at all!  The film is so captivating in every aspect that you often forget you are watching a foreign film and that they are actually speaking in German, a language which I have no knowledge of! But after seeing this, I want to know more because as many times as I have already seen this film (try 12x), I am endlessly fascinated by the language. I've even begun to pick up new German words just from hearing them speak repetitively!

The plot may have been simple but the acting was solid, charismatic, and charming!  The up and coming 20 something Franka Potente who plays Lola is simply amazing!  Her breathtaking performance won me over!

Moritz Bleibtreu who plays Manni, Lola's boyfriend, is a sight to behold, as well!  Besides the fact that he is gorgeous, his acting is also very strong! I would say that he has a certain charm in the way that he appears on screen, which I have not seen in an actor in a long time. And, I think that's why the two actors work very well on screen. They convey a sort of magical quality between them that makes them seem real.

The two main characters Lola and Manni convey a strong sense of personality and character throughout the film. You can't help but fall in love with them and their charm. There is this magic in the way that they interact with each other that is just so beautiful, that I often find myself wondering if they are together in real life because I just cannot imagine them ever being apart! They are just so cute, humorous, and natural together that it is romantic!

Even though the story's main focus is not completely centered on their love, you get a strong sense of love between them, that is just so adorable! Yet, at the same time the film is about love and devotion, her love triumphing over the obstacles, in order to save Manni.

It is definitely more Lola's story than Manni's. Her effort to save Manni is propelled by her love for him, but the film is more about her learning to rely on herself in order to save him, rather than relying on anyone else, such as her father.

Run Lola Run's plot has a lot to do with repetition and over coming obstacles which seem impossible. Running and time seem to be the two major themes seen in the film.  Lola's race against time is evident, as she races against exhilarating, pulsating, high energy, techno beats, in order to over come the obstacles that stand in the way of saving her love Manni.

What is admirable about Lola, is her strong determination to succeed and conquer the obstacles. She fights for what she believes in and loves, and she perseveres...This often seems represented in her running.

If anyone hasn't seen this film yet, you must, because it is just an incredible experience which will be unforgettable! I've seen it 12x, and, I would see it again, and again, and again....if I could! So, go see Run Lola Run, because you won't regret it!
