1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Rear Camping Storage Shelf

Camping with a family requires a lot of gear.  Adding a Black Lab to the mix requires even more "stuff" and extra space for the dog to perch.  To maximize the storage and create a secure, enclosed area for gear, I made a camping storage shelf.

I wanted something that is removable, allows for storing heavy gear underneath (like coolers and Action Packers), and could potentially be used as a bed.  I also like to be able to remove coolers and other stuff without having to totally unload the truck.  I had a rear storage shelf in my old Montero that worked real well so I decided to do something similar.  The narrow roofline of the 4runner precluded using a solid board for the shelf, so I came up with the hinged wing design.

To start out, I cut the boards to size and prepared the bracketry.

The next step was to screw it all together and slide it in the 4runner to make sure it fit.

Then I added the wings, which creates some handy storage areas above the wheel wells.

I was pleased with the results and it was turning out pretty close to what I envisioned/sketched.  The next to the last step was to add the carpeting and slide it back in.  Here's what it looks like with the gate closed.

Finally I loaded up a bunch of gear and the dog to make sure it will work in the boonies.

There's plenty of room on top for a lot more gear (i.e. packs full of clothes).  Of course the dog will have to move over a bit, but he's usually so psyched to go camping that he'd be happy on the roof.  Sleeping bags, ground pads, tent, and some other gear go on the roof rack (in waterproof Pelican cases).  This leaves the back seat completely open for our two girls and all their traveling toys.

The rear rack is secured to the rear tie-down mounts so it will not shift when 4-wheeling.
