Botcon - 2003 Art Entry

For 2003 I decided to enter the art contest and try out my more artistic skills.  Included are my initial sketches and ideas...all detailing the painstaking process I went through designing and eventually culminating in a poster dedicated to the shuttle tragedies of both the recent Columbia of '03 and to Challenger of 1986.

These were my initial, "trial" sketches.  I had to think out how each of the characters would look, what positions they'd be facing, as well as the overall look of the poster that would be created.  From the get-go I knew I'd be featuring Omega Supreme and that he'd be among the largest.  I did a sketch of Astrotrain and a partial sketch of Blastoff of the Combaticons for Decepticons...but given time constraints I decided to do just Autobots so alas.

The two symbols in the upper-right corner streaming up and slanted at an angle are ideas I had to represent the two lost space shuttles and they were each inspired by the mission emblem of the Columbia and also an image of the Columbia as it fragmented over the southern USA.  I may refine these a bit but they both seem good elements.

My first character sketch, Skyfire/Jetfire, turned out surprisingly good.  References from Dreamwave's MTMTE: Issue #3 and The Transformers.Net proved highly useful recreating Skyfire.  Most difficult to draw was the detailing of his backpack and legs as well as trying to gauge the position of his wings when folded up.
Cosmos was among the smallest of the Autobots, so I made sure to draw him no higher than Skyfire's torso.  However Cosmos also proved to be equally, if not more complex than Skyfire.  His curved arms, body, and head were especially difficult.  Detailing on his raised right arm plus the blasters over his wrists was taken into account as well, again relying on Dreamwave's MTMTE, in this case #2.
Omega supreme is so large in comparison to other transformers that I had to break him into specific parts.  Most of the work will go to his main body, featured here.  I started with the main bulk of his body, adding the shoulders, upper arms, his backpack and the "wings" its supporting, as well as the back of his head.  The wings were especially difficult to maintain the curves, although the head was equally complex with the turret mount jutting out the back.  Further problematic is that his body is positioned at a more striking angle than the others.
The next step in drawing Omega and the other characters was to transfer onto tracing paper.  Here I've recreated Omega Supreme as a whole by overlaying the 3 sheets that comprised his body - the legs are faint to see in this because the other 2 sheets happen to be laying on top.
Here's the 3 traces of Cosmos, Skylynx, and Skyfire/Jetfire from left to right respectively.  Compared with Omega Suprme tracing each of these guys was easy...although as any artist would say tracing is the EASIEST thing in art.  It's the next step, TRANSFERRING the traces that's a pain.
The poster here, nearly completed.  I just finished transferring the drawings onto white poster board from the tracing paper (I know...an obvious DUH) and cutting out the crucial elements from the white poster onto a slightly smaller black poster board, to which they will eventually be posted.

The 4 characters can be seen fairly clearly despite the light pencil drawing and I was pleased they turned out so well altogether...a reward after nearly two weeks of dedicated work and excruciating detail.

In addition, the two star-symbols (visible from my first sketch on this page I've finally gotten drawn out and partially cut-out along with the characters themselves.  Despite their significance in representing the lost space shuttles I feel that I've neglected them a bit up to this point.

Although not-yet-complete, this cut-out image represents how I plan to lay everything out, both characters and symbols.  More trimming, ink, and colors are all that's needed before I can paste it up and send it off to the contest!

Ta-da!  Finished on Friday, July 18, 2003!  Just in time to be mailed off on Saturday and onto Botcon!

After some final trimming with a very fine model knife as well as painting in the quote to the shuttles I pasted together the whole thing via two sheet of laminate.  Altogether it turned out alright, although I wish I could have done more.  Still, this was what I had in mind and I believe the most important part of the poster was the message, to which I think many people at the contest will understand and appreciate.

Well, onto Botcon 2003! :D
