TimeSplitters Review by: MIKE
BEFORE I CONTINUE...
To take advantage of all the sweetness of the game, you have got to get a multitap and four controllers. You haven't played the game unless you've gone you and three of your buds against fifteen bots in a Capture the Bag match. You should also go to Map Editor and create a few of these amazing levels for Capture the Bag.
STORY MODE
You pick a dude and you kill peeps throughout a level, you pick up an item at the end of it, then make your way back to the beginning killing other peeps that come out of the floor (TimeSplitters). That's basically the shiznit of all the levels. There are eighteen levels and three skill levels. I don't remember every single one, but the first is at a tomb in Egypt (reminds me a lot of Hamanaptra in The Mummy), then there's a Chinese one at a restaurant, then a haunted mansion, then some other stuff until you get to the last level at this like futuristic spaceport type thing. The story mode is not even close to being as fun as multiplayer. Co-op is pretty fun (actually really really fun), but I'm pretty sure you don't get anything for beating the game Co-op. To get all the guys playable in Multiplayer Mode (or "Arcade"), then you have to beat all three skill levels on Single Player story. That is tough. It's not that hard, it's just time consuming, and when you're alone and this alien guy on all fours comes poppin' out the floor on all fours and starts makin' these weird noises, it scares the hell out of you. One player, and two player for that matter, are really nerve racking.
ARCADE MODE
Now this is the world famous Multiplayer Mode of TimeSplitters, the most fun you'll have shootin' people up on any video game. The great thing about it is that there are bots, possibly which outdoes the GoldenEye Multiplayer. You could go four player deathmatch in GoldenEye, but you couldn't have like 19 peeps goin' at it in a dark room the size of my bedroom (not big at all) in an utter free for all. Now that's fun. There are a bunch of different arcade modes, Deathmatch, BagTag, uh..., and a bunch of others, but the pride and joy of the Arcade Mode, and the whole game is Capture the Bag. It's Capture the Flag with a B where the Fl is supposed to be. You can play it and have a good time in one of the normal levels. Chinese is tons and tons of fun for Capture the Bag. There's a base on each side and you can tons of kills up in that piece. Only play with two teams. I've never done it any other way, so I cna vouch for the sweetness of 1 on 1, but like there's only 2 good places to put bags in that level so only do two teams. Anyway, what I was gettin' into was that the best levels to play Capture the Bag on are the ones you make yourself. I put on some directions about how to make my two favorite levels up at the top of this piece, but the best time you'll have is on your own level. Whatever visions you got, whether it be for Capture the Bag or for any mode, you can do it in this game. Maybe not as detailed as you want, but you can come close, man. It is insane how mad you can make this business.
There's another mode past story and arcade that you unlock after beating all of Story in One Player on any mode, even Easy (it's pretty easy). I'm pretty sure it's called like Special or something, but I can't really remember. Wait, I remember, it's called "Challenge." The "Challenge" in the Challenge mode is kinda weird, but it's fun. One of the levels is you gotta kill like 100 "Duckmen" in a minute or somethin'. Another you gotta shoot the bowls off of all these Robofishes (Robot with a fishbowl on head). Then there's ones like shottin' 50 heads off of zombies in 2 minutes. It's fun and a little thing you can do by yourself rather than be scared out of your mind in Story mode (okay, I'm a pansy. So what?).
You can't go wrong with TimeSplitters. It's a pretty much unknown game (at least I'm the only person I know who has it) but it is awesome. It wasn't really advertised at all so you had to have your head up to catch it. If you have PS2 and you don't have TimeSplitters, just buy it, please. It is an AMAZING game. Plus, it's like 7 bucks anyway. You'll regret it if you never get it, and you'll be missing out on a classic if you never play it.
