Suthat Temple
The temple was built in the
First reign in the central
area of the city, and completed in the Third reign.
It is another significant and enchanting monastery
in the Rattanakosin era with several precious objects.
With in the Vihara (main hall) are mural paintings
and medieval gold leaf carved wooden doors.
Originally, King Rama ll carved the middle door,
a flora and vegetation designed. Due to deterioration
from the fire, the piece has been moved and now
preserved in the National Museum. The hall is surrounded by a bronze horse and
28 Chinese pagodas, which symbolize 28 Great Buddhas. Other important buildings
with in the temple are the balcony buit during King Rama lll which contains 156
Buddha images, Sala Loy - a ptace for the King to view the ceremonies of the
Great Swing, the longest Udosot (ceremony hall) of Thailand, the supreme
Patriach monastery, and the statue of King Rama Vlll which the current monarch
makes merit on June 9th every year.
