|Not to long ago Playa del Carmen was nothing but a small fishing village and the point to take the ferry over to Cozumel. Now it is the fastest growing city in Mexico. Laying about 40 miles south of Cancun this beautiful town is one of the ulitmate vacation destinations. There are many wonderful, nice small hotels and villas on the beach as well as a short distance from it in town. The mega AI resorts are located in Playacar just a few minutes south from Playa del Carmen itself. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and clubs that line Playa's 5th street as well as other side streets. Playa is all around one of the best vacation spots in Mexico.
Getting here and around - Playa is located about 40 miles south of Cancun or about 30 miles from the airort. One of the easiest ways to get there is a colectivo, which is usually a van and cost runs about $20-$30US. There is now bus service offered from the commericial teminal at the Cancun Airport by Riviera. Cost is 65 pesos and is a very inexpensive and reliable means of getting to Playa del Carmen. You can also rent a car or take a taxi but just head down Hwy 307 south about 30 min. and your there. Ave. Juarez is the main street to get you into town. Getting around in town is very easy, just hail a taxi and they can take you most anywhere at very reasonable rates(12 to 15 pesos). If your coming from Playacar taxis cost to go to "Centro" is only 40 pesos. 5th Ave (Quinta Avenida) is where most people head. This street is the main area for everything you need. There are plenty of restaurants, each with their own distinct atmosphere, shops that have everything that you could need for your souvenir shopping and plenty of bars to quench your thurst.
