Ho hum. After dithering about surfing or white water rafting, I found a bookshop and hied me to the beach with a copy of - don't laugh - Gone with the Wind. Spent the day alternating between american civil war (& sunbathing) and swimming to cool off when that southern passion got all too much. Found a pub which shows videos along with cheap food and beer, and watched Castaway. Resolved not to get shipwrecked.
Finally did a touristy-tour yesterday: traditional dance thing with much meaningful waving of hands and hitting of people with leafy branches. Luckily they had crib notes on what it was all about - a monkey and a tiger fighting some guys for no good reason and never reappearing, an evil spirit possessing various people just for the hell of it, a mother offering her son for sacrifice but the good spirit turns the kid immortal, then the kid turns into the good spirit and a servant turns into a bad spirit (via a boar with an improbably large penis, however often they cut it off, and a bird) and they fight on. Don't think anyone wins. Don't think I'll be going to Balinese dances either, given the stuff they were doing to the boar. Stick with disco... Otherwise, saw gold&silversmiths doing their stuff, woodcarvers at theirs, the Mother temple (looked rather rundown, but certainly big) and a bat cave temple (a small cave with a few altars and thousands of bats hanging from the ceiling). Accompanied by a nice Ozzie honeymooning couple (nothing but ozzies here) and a friendly local guide. A bit too friendly he seemed at the end of the day after dropping the others off, saying he loved me (which seemed rather hasty to me, after a day of talking about Balinese and Hindu history. There's only so much you can judge about a person's mind and soul from that..). Don't know if he was after a good tip or a good time, but got neither anyway.
