Holguín is located in the eastern part of theCuba, with a great potential for the development of tourism and recreation. 1.5 millions of people live there.
The highest achievement of its tourist infrastructure lies in its being one with nature, blending harmoniously with the sea and the forest . Nevertheless, the essential facilities and services capable of meeting the requirements of modern life are still very much available.
Potential tourist attractions include 34 rivers, six waterfalls—among them Guayabo, the largest in the country—and six dams, as well as five submarine areas, nineteen historical and cultural sites, 135 archaeological sites and about 60 kilometers of beaches composed of exquisite white sand.
For people who love the nature, Holguín have the 30 percent of Cuba's endemic vegetable species, and thousand animal species typical of the island, especially birds and butterflies. An important bird corridor crosses over the spa, which is situated at a place designated by experts as the archaeological capital of Cuba.

Guardalavaca, one of the most famous beaches in the province, offers tourists luxuriant coral reefs, interesting cliffs and amazing vegetation. Guardalavaca covers a 1,200 metre-long bank formed by shell-like beaches, creating intimate surroundings that are frequently enhanced by enormous cliffs. Guardalavaca is not far from Gibara, the place where Colón first landed in Cuba.
Boca de las Esponjas, El Salto and Cañon de los Aguajíes are only a few of the best-known sites, all of them ideal for scuba diving, while Tanques Azules, in neigbouring Gibara, a grouping of unique flooded caverns, offer special challenges for speleodivers.
Saetía Key: where the largest wild animals in the country can be found. A vast array of buffalo, antelope, deer and wild hogs can be hunted in this area.
The Loma de la Cruz (The Hill of the Cross), the most famous place in the city, featuring a 450-step stairway that is replete with legends. The site was founded on May 3, 1950, and every anniversary is celebrated with a pilgrimage, masses and a multitude of dances.
Mirador de Mayabe
At the top of a hill east natural balcony to one of the most beautiful landscapes of Cuba is opened: the Valley of Mayabe, closely together of the city of Holguín.
Museum “Chorro de Maíta” .
It is the result of an exhaustive local archeological research that has taken more than 80 years. It constitutes the most important discovery in Cuba regarding an aboriginal settlement. Thus, the site has been declared National Monument. We strongly recommend the visit.
As well known as “La Periquera” (parakeet cage), it is located across from the central park “Calixto García” and visiting it will allow you to know more about the history of the city by means of documents and an excellent archeological collection. Among the varied objects displayed, there is a precious relic: an ax carved in the form of an idol that has become the symbol of Holguín.
Pancho donkey lives at the Mayabe lookout, one of the best view in the area., this little four -legged beer drinker will guzzle a whole bottle by himself when invited a guest. His predecessor drank 50.000 beers in his 29 years of being an ass,but it looks like Panchito might break the records.
This plateau rests 600 metres above sea level with a spectacular view of the Nipe – Cristal mountain region, 110 kilometres east from Holguin city. A deep pine forest covers most of this territory, also Cuba's largest nickel reserve, with rivers, waterfalls and rapids. La Mensura National Park includes 300 different bird species and a wildlife program. The 26-room Pinares de Mayari villa was modeled after Alpine mountain huts, and offers many nature activities.
This seaside town is a slice of the Spanish Mediterranean. Once the main port on the northeastern coast of Cuba, it is still is an important fishing centre. Its colonial houses with their red-tiled roofs, arches and stained-glass windows are cooled by sea breezes. Still standing are the ruins of the Fort Bateria de Fernando VII, whose cannons guarded one of the main ports in eastern Cuba for the slave and sugar trade. Other highlights of the town are the Museums of Colonial Art and Natural Sciences. A jaunt to Bariay takes you to the spot where Christopher Columbus first landed in Cuba in 1492.
Naranjo Bay
This has been converted into a nature park, where visitors can explore fascinating flora and fauna. The best known feature of the park is the natural aquarium, where sea lions and dolphins put on a show, and where guests can swim with the dolphins. The bay has two restaurants: a seafood restaurant at the aquarium and a country-style restaurant, Conuco de Mongo Viña, where you can sample the best home cooking after a visit to the cactus garden, mini-zoo or jaunt on one of its nature trails.San Isidoro´s Cathedral

Internation Non-Budget Film Festival
The International Non-Budget Film Festival of Gibara, took the shape of a cultural event. This started to develop from it’s very announcement, since more than 300 short films and almost a hundred feature films and scripts from all over the planet were entered. This success was due to the fact that the Festival presented itself as an ideal platform for aesthetically avant-garde and alternative minimum-budget filmmaking.
The Party of the Ibero-American Culture constitutes a cultural fact, commemorative of the mutual encounter among the cultures of the Old one and of the New World that in the Cuban case takes place when arriving the Admiral Christopher Columbus to the Bay of Bariay, located in the current County of Holguín, October 27 1492. Every year is devoted to stand out the culture of an Iberian region and to a Latin American country.
It is the biggest promotional party dedicated to the music, the dance, the theater, the plastic arts and the literature in the country. It includes investigators' encounters that promote the cultural traditions in their relationship with the actuality.The young artists' of the whole country celebration in narrow linking with the holguinero town.
Las Romerias de mayo in Holguín are maybe the biggest parties in the Cuban culture due their plurality, for the diversity of events that summons where the main characters are poets, minstrels, rockers, rappers, folkloric groups , traditional, plastic artists - from the most traditional until the performances makers -, scenic artists, film directors (or to generalize, artists of the audiovisual one), creators all that, next to the town, they take the streets, the parks, the cultural institutions to be expressed.
Iberoarte gathers the most representative in the handmade product of the region that include foreign participation, mainly coming from Iberoamerica. It is a space where creators, promoters, collectors and managers promote and they market their works. The event, transformed into one of the main spaces for the development of the craft in Cuba.
