This picture and the one below were taken from the ridge just north of 2/7 Headquartes at Dai La pass.  The obvious road on the left runs from Dai La to Cobb Bridge.  Perhaps three or four miles.  It seemed like so much further then, getting to headquarters was usually a half day round trip and getting into Danang was an all day event, at least, by the time you managed to catch a ride both ways (to be honest, it might be that we didn't always bust our chops to catch that ride back).

A squad of us would walk this road every morning up to the intersection of Hotel Battery's road.  We'd set there until some truck came by to give us a ride back.  One day, (just checked the diary, it was July 22nd) we were sweeping the road, got about half way and a truck passes us coming from Dai La.  We decided that since he'd made it there must not be any mines.  For the next couple of hours we hung out at some store/bar and played fooseball.  Clayton Tellio and myself took on David "Momma" Kass and some new guy.   Another time, just before we got to the end, a motorcycle pulled up behind us.  Some pimp with two "scivvie girls", when we stopped he opened up business.  For $2 you could take a turn, I passed on this delight but the corpsman and somebody else gave it a go.  They both caught the clap.  The pimp said something to Gus Mann and just about got a major thumping for his troubles.

Notice the low hill next to the white building.  If you look at the base of it you can just see an indistinct road.  Just to the right of the low hill the road to Hill 22 turned off to the left.   Going straight for a mile or so would bring you to the Catholic Ville.  This hill is the site of the August 12th road sweep fight (actually most of the fighting took place just off of the picture to the right).  There are two tall trees on top of the hill.  Just in front of them you can barely see a couple of small buildings (actually they were half finished block buildings with no roofs).  The sharp edge in front of and just to the right of  the buildings is where Steve Lewis and I were when he was shot.

This picture was taken from the ridge behind Division Headquarters.  We are looking toward Hill 10 and Cobb Bridge.
