What is Tees Rowing Club?

FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

What do we do?

The main focus of the club is (obviously) practicing the sport, and we have many members who only come rowing for the fun of it. The club also has a social side as well; organised quiz nights and meals are held.

However, if you’re the competitive type, there are lots of regattas (short distance races) and head races (long distance) held locally, during the racing season. Many crews from Tees have competed locally, and a few crews have even raced nationally.

How many members are there?

We have loads of members, and the junior section of the club is getting bigger and bigger each year. Organised junior rowing is on a Saturday morning, when the club is at it’s liveliest.

How old is the club?

Tees Rowing Club has been around for a pretty long time - since the 1800's in fact! It started off as two separate clubs, who then joined together to become Tees Rowing Club and built the current boathouse. Our boathouse now houses three clubs - Tees Rowing Club, UDSC BC (University of Durham; Stockton Campus Boat Club) and the University of Teesside BC.

I can canoe; so I can row, right?

Lets get one thing straight - rowing is NOT CANOEING!!!! It’s faster, sleeker, more graceful, doesn’t involve Eskimo rolls and most importantly it’s loads more FUN! It’s a great way to make loads of new friends and maybe even win a few pots along the way!

I’m not very good at sports - will I be able to do rowing?

Rowing is a great sport for anyone - especially if you are not good at ‘traditional’ ball sports like netball, cricket, footy etc. Rowing slowly builds up co-ordination between your hands and legs, and improves your balance and posture. You’ll also become fitter and it’s a brilliant way to tone your whole body.

How do I get started?

Anyone con come along on a Saturday morning, from 10am-12pm, and give the sport a try. There are plenty of people around to help you get started, and the club boasts a large number of ARA (Amateur Rowing Association) qualified coaches. Visit the Official TRC website for details of where to find us.
