Introduction
Quelques mois après l'exécution sommaire du capitaine Bannister, le gouverneur de la Jamaïque, le colonel Molesworth, obtient un autre succès dans sa lutte contre les flibustiers. Quoique beaucoup moins spectaculaire que la capture de Bannister, la condamnation d'un marin nommé Courtney, maître d'un petit sloop jamaïquain, n'en est pas moins une victoire du point de vue légal. Courtney avait été accusé, entre autres, d'avoir participé à la prise de Campêche en 1685 sous les ordres du flibustier français Granmont (voir le mémoire du gouverneur de Saint-Domingue, du 13 août 1686). Mais Molesworth n'avait pu obtenir sa condamnation lors d'un premier procès (voir sa correspondance de novembre et de décembre 1686). Il a pourtant moins de chance avec John Coxon depuis que celui-ci s'est échappé de Port Royal l'année précédente, alors qu'il avait ce chef flibustier à sa main prêt à être jugé pour piraterie (voir sa lettre de janvier 1686).
