Academy Evaluations:

Vulcan Academy of Physiology Student Evaluation – First Year A'Kora shows a minimal interest in her classes and lacks the dedication of the other students. Her control over even the most basic of the precepts of Sarak's Nine Stairs of Logic are minimal at best. This Office understands the unusual nature of her upbringing and takes into account her late start in life, but cannot excuse her behavior. Logic dictates that if the student is unable to perform the functions of a physician than a different path for her life be found. Desire alone will not make her competent. It is noted that Student A'Kora has requested transfer to forensic science department. This is positively endorsed by my office. - Doctor T'pvuk

Vulcan Academy of Physiology Student Evaluation – Graduation Student A'Kora has fully completed the studies and earned the degree awarded her by this University. She still lacks greatly in control of her emotions and I cannot in full conscience submit her application to the Humans at Star Fleet. Her continued inability to control her emotions will not bring honor to our planet. Our failure to understand the problems faced by the survivors of Coroli V and how they may be integrated fully within proper Vulcan society is evident. It is the suggestion of this office that Student A'Kora be assigned duties as an intern at a remote position so that she may focus more upon her studies at Logic and Control. - Doctor Suran

Star Fleet Evaluation for Cadet A'Kora

Cadet A'Kora shows a remarkable talent at Engineering that was amazing, until Star Fleet Intel finally coughed up her records and it was shown that she qualed as a Master Fleet Engineering Specialist more than twenty years ago. Why she is being forced to attend classes she could probably teach is beyond me. Then again, Cadet A'Kora is a bit beyond me, she's the angriest Vulcan I've ever met. I don't know if it's because of her greater age, or this anger management problem, but none of the other Vulcan Cadets will associate with her. In fact, her only friend seems to be an Andorian senior who is a technical assistant in one of her classes.

All of which is immaterial, Cadet A'Kora excels in her classes, doesn't instigate any problems, has a dedication to the more military side of instruction and clearly has a strong desire to continue in Star Fleet as a career. - Lt Cdr Jerry Fiztgivens, Counselor, Star Fleet Academy

Final Evaluation of Ensign A'Kora

Ensign A'Kora has graduated in the top of her class in Engineering, only expected considering her previous experience. I applaud her desire to complete Academy training when she could easily have gone to the fleet in a more expeditious manner. She chose instead to learn about the culture of Star Fleet from the ground up, so to speak. She will make a fine engineer and no doubt will be back here some day to share her experience with a new group of cadets.
- Admiral George Charun, Commandant, Star Fleet Academy

Psychological Profile:

Beliefs: Path of Surak
Ambitions: N/A
Annoyances: N/A
Hobbies: A'Kora is a practitioner of an obscure martial arts form almost unknown throughout Federation Space

KOMEREK
The origins of this martial art are lost in Romulan History. Some claim it is as old as their time on Vulcan and others believe it was developed after their arrival on Romulas. What is known is that Komerek is a brutal style of martial arts, which practices techniques designed to cripple and kill the opponent. Those who know this style of fighting are often thought of as thugs and extortionists. It's most infamous maneuvers are listed below.

Dursha – A fist-smash/punch type maneuver.

Kuluri - Similar to the "nerve pinch" of Vulcan fame. If the practitioner is focused, and strikes at a nerve cluster or other vulnerable points of the body, they can cause extreme pain. A master of the Komerek may actually "push" with native psi talent and can convince the nervous system that extreme damage has been inflicted, with only a touch. This may cause psychosomatic responses, such as blistering or burst blood vessels, depending on the will of the victim. Beings without nervous systems are immune.

M'larek - This is the infamous "bone-breaking strike" of the Komerek masters. Usually performed with a fist or the edge of an open hand, it allows the practitioner to break bones and inflict grievous internal injuries. In many cases the only visible sign that the injury has been suffered (other than the look of agony on the victim's face) is a bruise or small cut.

Sidrak - This maneuver allows the attacker to grab one of the target's arms or other limbs and break it, typically at a joint such as elbow or wrist. This causes the target to become incapacitated and the limb to be useless until healed.

A combination of the last two maneuvers is what A'Kora used on the DoT of the Academy.

Weapons associated with the Komerek style
Vrelnec (Cutlass)
Lirash (Lirpa)
Kailune (Throwing Knife)

Notes on Komerek:

The Vulcan Philosophy of Logic and Mental Control makes this martial arts style less effective against them; they can blunt the effects of the painful strikes. While breaking a bone of limb will make certain actions difficult or impossible, it is the rare Vulcan who will be incapacitated by pain. They generally have a higher willpower and their mental training ensures that it will take a true master of the style to successfully perform the Kuluri manuver on a Vulcan. Perhaps in surprise, they might gain an initial advantage, but given a moment to order their mind, almost any Vulcan can minimize or completely ignore the effect. Furthermore, all students of any mental discipline that is similar to the Kolinar (sp?) will be completely immune to this maneuver.

Personality: Direct. Brusque. Possessive. A’kora has "anger management" issues which she (tries to) maintain rigid self-control over. Her "fall back" position is to allow military protocol and regulations choose her path for her.

Comments:

Ensign A'Kora is not ready for a position of leadership. She has issues, deep issues, involving her abandonment by the Romulan Colonists and the thick headed "experts" on Vulcan who let her sink into isolation and tried to crush what ever spirit she might have had. These issues are under control most times, but the occasional outburst of anger I have seen proves to me that there is a danger somewhere. Whoever recommended that Star Fleet give all those children to the Vulcans needs to have their head examined. Note, I do not say she is unfit for Star Fleet, I say she requires some special classes and maybe a few months of in depth examination without the pressures of training to distract her from self healing.

It may be that I am over reacting. I've never seen any Vulcan with anger management problems before, so no doubt it seems a glaring problem due to the contrast. Brass in Star Fleet Intel owes her a favor and has already overruled my objections to Ensign A'Kora's continued advancement. But dammit, I hope someone listens to me. Someday, if she doesn't deal with these issues, someone is going to be hurt. Badly. - Cmdr Thomas Burns M.D., CMO Starfleet Academy

History:

FEDERATION SCIENTISTS SAVE ROMULAN REFUGEES
(From "The New York Times" June Fifth, 2366)

Once again Star Fleet personal have shown the galaxy the true meaning of racial harmony. A Vulcan Science Expedition, sponsored by Star Fleet, has investigated the sudden depopulation of the Romulan Colony of Coroli V and found it to be abandoned due to the virulent Phyrox Plague, a deadly disease with a 99.99% mortality rate. At risk themselves from exposure, Federation Science teams have moved in and found only a handful of survivors from this once proud and viable colony whose population formerly numbered in the millions. In a magnanimous gesture, the Planet Vulcan, long known for it's distrust of anything Romulan, has offered to adopt the survivors, none of whom are older than the age of seventeen. For more information, see "Plague Survivors" on page twenty-four. If you are viewing this via PADD, click <here>.

Born of a Romulan father and a Vulcan mother on the planet of Coroli V in the year 2350. In 2366 her home world was stricken by the deadly Phyrox Plague, which has a mortality rate of 99.99%. An outcaste by birth, she was abandoned along with many others that the ruling council thought unimportant and left behind in the evacuation. A Federation research party rescued them and brought the children to Vulcan. A'Kora was raised in Vulcan traditions but the birthright of Logic is not hers. The conflict between her Romulan Passion and Vulcan Logic drove her to leave Vulcan. She traveled with the merchant forces for some time but eventually joined Star Fleet. (Because otherwise she isn't really able to be in the game really)

A'Kora was born a slave, and for the first sixteen years of her life, that is all that she knew. On a world with anti-gravity transports and replicators, she lived in an unheated concrete cell and walked in bare feet, eating gruel or begging for table scraps. She suffered beatings and other humiliations, but prayed in thanks every night as she grew older and met other slaves who had masters that demanded sexual performances from their female slaves. A'Kora never forgot that she was one of the lucky ones.

Then came the plague, and no one was lucky.

There were weeks of panic as death passed through the colony like a wind. Slaves were abandoned and left to fend for themselves. A'Kora survived by eating garbage and small lizards. She killed another slave who tried to rape her. She prayed for death to take her. Instead, Starfleet arrived and eventually saved her.

Life on Vulcan was not slavery, but it was a confinement of another sort. A mental confinement. A'Kora tried to adjust, she tried to make the Vulcan family that adopted her proud, but she had problems with anger and impulsiveness that often brought shame upon them for her actions. She was taught the edicts of Logic and control, but had trouble holding true to those principals. She learned the traditions of mental discipline, but it did not help settle her wild soul.

In a misguided attempt to become "more Vulcan"' A'Kora sought to deny her violent tendencies by submerging herself into a healer's profession. The gentle and patient instructors were careful to guide her, but the other students were not as wise. They were, of course, too Vulcan to harass A'Kora, but they ostracized her from their company and she grew more isolated and her troubles with controlling her temper increased. After passing her basic courses, she moved into forensic pathology as a specialty. Dead Vulcans did not judge her with their contempt; the dead are beyond passing judgment.

As a human, she would have been considered spooky with how much more comfortable she felt with the dead than the living. The rituals of Old Vulcan, which surround their death and bereavement taboos, were of comfort, for they are possibly the only places where, as Spock's Father once said, "my logic grows faulty" and she might have found balance in this, but it wasn't her fate to do so.

On Vulcan, murder is almost unknown. The concept is well understood, but Vulcan's simply do not murder one another. But other people do sometimes murder Vulcans, and to investigate them fully, a specialist in Vulcan physiology is required. A'Kora attended such investigations as a student assistant, and she saw other worlds. She saw places where every word, every gesture, every frown or snort of aggravation she might have would not be weighed and measured and found as a fault in her very being. She was too "logical" to abandon her studies when she was so close to a degree, but she abandoned Vulcan the day of graduation and has not set foot on the planet since then.

The employment opportunities for Vulcan Forensic Pathology Scientists outside of Vulcan are rather small. Without a recommendation from her university, Star Fleet certainly wasn't going to accept her when they had other applicants with the full support of the places of higher learning. A'Kora soon found herself looking at a bleakly small number of choices.

The Triangle. Where else but there could anyone of mixed Romulan blood hope to find some measure of peace? She hired on as crew on a tramp freighter, as Ship's Doctor. It was a small ship, and couldn't afford someone who was idle at all times, so A'kora became an engineering hand, and found it was imminently more satisfying. She continued to move from ship to ship, learning more about spacefaring in general and engineering in particular.

Being again in contact with Romulans, even if they were half-breeds, thieves, exiles and expatriates, awoke a long subdued hatred within A'kora. The smoldering anger that had always been within her flamed anew as the possibility of revenge became something that could actually occur instead of a long smothered dream.

As a slave, A'kora was a possession, a thing. Her mother was even worse than a thing; she was a toy that was broken by the indignities that were inflicted to create Pon Farr. Other slaves that had been family members were sometimes sold, treated with the same casual disregard as her mother had been, and the threat that someday her fate might be the same had made A'Kora's life miserable. A nearly overwhelming hatred for the family that was responsible for all the indignities of her life flared within her. The Vanyarii Clan, a sub-house of the Kayton Noble House, was where she was born and enslaved. A'Kora wished each member of this clan a painful and slow death.

She vanished for twenty-one years. During this time, the Heir to the Vanyarii Clan was murdered. The Clan itself fell into disrepute when evidence turned up that implicated their Heir in selling secrets of Romulan war ships to the Klingons, Ferengii and the Federation. A'Kora returned to Federation Space just before the news of this leaked out.

Logic dictated her next step. Hurting the Romulan Empire as greatly as possible was her only real desire any longer and the Federation offered that opportunity. Within a week of reaching a Federation Colony, A'Kora turned herself over to Starfleet Intelligence and spent months debriefing them life inside Romulan Space. Mostly it confirmed things they already knew, but third party verification is always useful in an Intel Organization, and her efforts were not unappreciated. In return, she only asked to be allowed entry into the Star Fleet Academy.

Though she was older than most recruits, her Romulan-Vulcan life span did not make the request an impossibility. A'Kora had missed the Battle of Wolf 359 and the Dominion War while pursuing her vengeance against Clan Vanyarii. She worked diligently as an Engineer and eventually an Engineering Officer on a succession of ships within Federation Service. While never a member of "the fast track" due to her disinterest in advancing, she acquitted herself honorably and eventually became Cheng of a small research vessel and then a larger cruiser. With fifteen years of good service and experience in Starfleet, she was assigned as an Engineering Instructor at Starfleet.

The Director of Training had a grudge against A'Kora due to her heritage; he hated Romulans and knew that she had been born one. He never passed an opportunity to berate her and openly tried to ruin her career. In doing so, he pushed the wrong buttons and A'Kora broke his jaw, three ribs and his pelvic bone with one complicated maneuver. If she hadn't thrown him at another officer, he probably would have broken his neck.

She was busted from Captain to Lieutenant Commander, and only managed to hold on to her commission by the grace of a few favors from an Intell Officer who knew her history. He made it clear that this was the last favor she had coming from Intell.

Summary of Court Martial –
Charges

1) Conduct Unbecoming an Officer

2) Striking a Superior Officer
3) Failure to obey a direct order
4) Disrespect to a Superior Officer

The First Charge is dropped due to the statues of limitations governing lascivious behavior and due to the fact that it occurred before Captain A'Kora was a member of Star Fleet.

The Third and Fourths Charge are also dropped. It is the opinion of this Court that Captain A'Kora had endured humiliation and undue disrespect herself due to the actions of Captain Harrold, who as her Superior Officer, should have known better. As the Director of Training for Start Fleet Academy, he should have accorded his junior officers more respect.

This Court cannot, however, allow the Second Charge to be ignored. No matter what the provocation, Star Fleet cannot and will not allow it's officers to strike one another. Certainly not with the violence and lethality which was displayed. Captain A'Kora is lucky to not be facing charges of manslaughter, and she well knows it. It is the recommendation of this Court that Captain A'Kora be demoted two rankings and retained for further service. The only reason this Court does not recommend discharge from active service is due to the unusual circumstances regarding the entire incident. - Admiral Rosemary Vicardi Chief Justice, Starfleet Legal Service, Earth Station, San Francisco District.
