Personality: Istria is a striking looking Bajoran. The most noticeable feature of her appearance is that she only has one eye, and wears a black eye-patch. Appearance: If she smiled a bit, and had two eyes, she'd be stunning! But her typical expression is a frown, only partly due to her Bajoran nose-furrows! Personality: Istria is generally quiet and reserved, though she can be sharp and snappy if someone annoys her. She may also go icily silent.

She has a subtle, slightly dark sense of humor, but not many people get to see this. Istria is ultra-reliable and safety-conscious, and diligent about her work, as well as being fair in her treatment of others. For relaxation, she loves reading old terran classics, in 'real book' form, and loves music. She has an excellent singing voice, but has not used it for years. For stress relief, she heads for the Holodeck and takes on some of the toughest mountain peaks known - Istria is a very competent mountaineer.

History:

Istria looked set for a sparkling scientific career in Starfleet, when a routine geological survey she was supervising went tragically wrong. She had been put in charge of four other young scientist and cadets. A badly placed explosive charge led to the roof of the cave where they were collecting rock samples caving in. A scientist and a cadet were killed instantly, and one died of his injuries soon after. One escaped with minor injuries, and Istria lost her eye to a flying shard of rock. Even though it was one of the dead scientists who placed the fatal charge, Istria blames herself, as she was the senior member of the expedition. Although she could have had her eye 'replaced' artificially, she choose to lose it completely and now wears a black eye patch. She considers it a kind of self-imposed 'punishment'. She is plagued by self-doubt and guilt, and needed months of counseling before being invited to resume her previous role. She now hides her doubts under a facade of cool efficiency. She is fiercely protective of all of the members of her science team, and although she may seem a hard taskmistress, she sets far harder targets for herself than for others.
