Three months before Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise are due to step down Starfleet sends them on an olive branch mission to save the Klingons from inevitable destruction due to the loss of their moon Praxis, but the peace initiative is nearly thwarted when Klingon Chancellor Gorkon is assassinated, and Kirk and McCoy are wrongly convicted of his murder.
