Repainting the W set

During 1999 and 2000 Historic Electric Traction has been restoring W3 for State Rail.

The W set cars being restored are: The single deck power cars C3702 and C3708 which entered service in 1958; and the double deck trailers T4801 and T4814 from 1964. It is expected that T4814 will be removed from the set and retained as a spare car. This carriage will be replaced by the single deck trailer T4790. T4790 was originally T4740, the last single deck suburban carriage built in 1960.

When completed, the restored W set will contain the newest single decker and the oldest double decker.

C3708 receiving an internal repaint at Redfern Carriageworks on 24 October 1999. The two power cars originally entered service with a brown and cream internal colour scheme. When they were refurbished and fitted with fluorescent lighting, they received a two-tone green and white interior. As it is not possible to reinstate the incandescent lights, the cars will not be repainted in the brown and cream colours.

T4740 (T4790) has retained its incandescent lights. Its interior will be repainted brown and cream.
