The Charters Towers
Story Jupiter's Lucky Strike It was 24 December, 1871 and a small group of prospectors, Hugh Mosman, James Fraser, George Clarke and a young twelve-year-old aboriginal, Jupiter were ready to call it a day. There was a sudden flash of lightning, and a thunderclap. The horses bolted and Jupiter was sent to search for them. He found them sheltering at the base of Towers Hill. That was not all he found - a nugget of gold glittered in the stream! This marked the discovery of gold in Charters Towers which went on to become the richest major gold field in Australia, heralding a windfall for the people of this state. |

Modern Story began in 1969 The modern Charters Towers story began in 1969. The gold price was US$40/oz yet the project founder, James 'Jim' Lynch, believed the price would rise. He felt that with modern methods and sufficient capital, Charters Towers had the potential to yield as much gold again as it had in the past. Over the next 15 years he conducted extensive field prospecting as well as talking with geologists and many of the residents of Charters Towers who had worked in the old mines. He also conceived the idea of consolidating the myriad of small tenements and set out to acquire those he could. A change in Queensland mining legislation in 1984 encouraged such amalgamation and accelerated his efforts. The nearby community and infrastructure of the City of Charters Towers is an integral part of the company's progress today. |
