A Review of Cheryl Yun's "suffering and our distracted culture"
"Mad in Pursuit"
In a show of sometimes dismayingly slick thesis work, School of Visual Arts
MFA photo grads seem determined to prove they're ready for the world. And
plenty of them are. Laura Griffin's deft "Notations" on the urban scene,
Ofer Wollberger's interior views of abandoned or transitional commercial
spaces, and Julia Cowing's all-but-impenetrable black-onblack portraits
(collectively called "Strangers in the Night") stand out. But the
show-stopper is an installation of handbags made by H. Cheryl Yun from
newspapers, each featuring a repeated image of a natural disaster, a war, an
oil spill, or other bad news. Cleverly constructed in several recognizably
chic styles, these small, intracate pieces turn consumerist culture's
obliviousness to the world at large back on itself."
