Fencing became a main interest of mine beginning my freshman year (1995/96) when I first learned the basics of the sport. Unfortunately the club members seemed to dissipate in what was my sophomore year (1996/97). I departed Utica College for the spring semester of that year to head to Wales on an international exchange. While at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (UWA), I fenced with their fencing club, learning from the coaching staff there and from the other fencers. Returning to UC for the next academic year, I discovered that the UC Fencing Club was comprised of 2 members: myself and the coach (who was also a UC student). I became the president and we shared the teaching duties for both the fencing class and the club. Since then (ie. Fall 1997-Spring 2000) I have retained the club presidency and the teaching duties while the group has grown in size and consistency. My responsibilities have included finding places and times to practice, keeping track of and acquiring equipment, planning for tournaments, and keeping club members apprised of various club happenings. I created the UC Fencing Club webpage, as well as setting up an e-mail list for the club and have been the main e-mail contact for the club, acting as liaison to other fencers around the state and region, as well as internationally. For my contributions to the Fencing Club I was recognized by the Athletic Department and the Fencing Club with an award normally given only to Utica College's varsity athletes.
