Objective: Students will focus on the roles of three minor characters: Paris, the Nurse and Mercutio
- definitions of foil, parallel and catalyst
-examination of why these particular characters are catalysts to Romeo and Juliet.
Minor Characters in Romeo and Juliet
Catalyst -One that precipitates a process or event, especially without being involved in or changed by the consequences
Parallel- Having comparable parts, analogous aspects, or readily recognized similarities
Foil -One that by contrast underscores or enhances the distinctive characteristics of another
Minor characters often provide parallels to the chief characters in the play
Paris - (parallel to Romeo)
When Juliet's parents try to force her into marriage with Paris, it leads to her rash plan to drink the Friar's potion. Paris is the Catalyst in this incident.
Mercutio - (parallel/foil to Romeo)
When Mercutio is killed in the duel with Tybalt, it provides the catalyst for Romeo wanting to avenge his friend's death. The result is Romeo's banishment and finally the tragedy.
Nurse
The Nurse's proposal is so repugnant to Juliet that it is the catalyst for Juliet's acceptance of the Friar's last resort.
