LESSON 7 - Character Sketches

Objective: Students will be able to utilize their knowledge of character sketches to synthesize one on any of the following characters.

  • Romeo
  • Juliet
  • Mercutio
  • Benvolio
  • Tybalt
  • Nurse
  • Friar Laurence

 

Review

1. The 5 paragraph essay. (the simplest one to do)

2. The thesis statement (the main idea of your topic)

3. 3 points that back up your statement

 

Handouts

1. Character Collage - students pick one of the major characters and create a collage based on characteristics exhibited by the character. (example - Juliet = young, romantic etc.)Students look through magazines and cut out images symbolizes these characteristics. hearts=romantic etc.

Instruction

  1. Students will get into groups with others doing the same character. The groups have 10 minutes to come up with 5-7 major characteristics of their character.
  2. Students will make a collage of their character (as a group of 3-5) based on the character collage handout. One class only
  3. Once this is done, students will/can separate to write their own character sketch. Each sketch must be unique, although some may have similar characteristics and proof.

Tybalt - hostile, hot-headed, vengeful, conceited, volatile
Romeo - lovesick, immature, impatient, passionate, emotional
Mercutio - impatient, humorous, troubled, fun-loving, loyal, witty, cynical, volatile
Juliet - immature, passionate,
Friar Laurence - helpful, good-hearted, meddling, interfering, reasonable, holy, sympathetic, sensible, naive
Benvolio - peaceable, merry, reasonable Nurse - garrulous, coarse, loud, kind, simple-minded

Example:

Tybalt, in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, is a hostile character.
