(Mama's Recipe)
_________________________________________________

Chili--

1 lb. coarse ground beef
1 big onion (chopped)
1 (8-oz.) can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
3 cups water
2 tablespoons flour
5 tablespoons chili powder

Bread Mixture--
1 cup corn meal
1/2 cup flour
1 tsp. salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
________________________________________________
Chili--Simmer beef and onion in 2 cups water until onion is tender.  Add tomato sauce, salt, chili powder, and pepper.  Let simmer 1-1/2 hours, adding as much water as necessary.  Mix flour with 1/2 cup cold water and stir into chili.  Let simmer a few minutes.

Bread Mixture*--Mix all ingredients of bread mixture.
Pour 1 cup chili into casserole.  Over this, spread thin
layer of corn meal mixture.  Place in 450-degree oven.
When cornbread mixture is done, but not brown, remove from oven.  Pour over another cup chili; spread another layer of cornbread mixture.  Let cook.
Repeat procedure until casserole dish is filled.  Sprinkle with grated cheese.  Makes 6 to 8 servings.

NOTE:
Fritos or taco chips may be substituted for the bread
mixture, but it won't taste like Mama's.
