Here's a cool cheat to get more than four bottles - up to 21, in fact. First, go somewhere where there's bugs or fish or anything. Now, get a bottle and swipe at the bug/fish. Halfway through the swipe, press start and swap the bottle with the item you want to turn into a bottle. Now un-pause - the item you switched to will be turned into a bottle with whatever you scooped up.

There is one downside, though - if you go to buy something that needs to be put in a bottle, the game won't recognise your extra bottles, so they're not all that useful - except maybe if you want to ditch something useless (like the claim check) to stock up on blue fire in the ice cave or something.
