Go to the quest status subscreen and press A on one of the songs (white note songs) so that the song is played to you. However, as soon as you have pressed A, push up on the control stick so that you move off the ocarina icon. Now, unpause, and press the notes to play the song you had chosen. You will hear the ocarina songs, even as you use the items.
