The ecliptic and the zodiac

• The ecliptic is the plane of the Earth’s orbit round the Sun

• The constellations of the zodiac are the areas of sky near the ecliptic

• The Sun moves along the ecliptic as the year progresses

  • the Sun’s daily path is not along the ecliptic as seen at any one time

• The Moon and planets orbit in roughly the same plane too
