Q&A answered by a real bmxer (me)
Q: What do u think about when u go for a big trick or one that u haven't done before?
A: There are alot of things u can think about, whatever really gets u pumped i guess. What I do is just say to myself "This has to be perfect", "All or nothing". Other people have told me that they imagine themselves as part of an army, superhumans, hitmen, all kinds of crazy stuff. They imagine themselves on espn or having a big part in props, just putting alot of pressure on themselves. But hey, if it works for them?...
Q: What modifications have u made to ur bike?
A: I haven't cut anything down on my bike yet, and I probably won't. If someone is thinking that their 36 pound bike will be that much lighter by drilling holes in their (non-griding) pegs or cutting their aluminum seatpost, they're kidding themselves. I went from a sealed 36 spoke single wall rim that was light as hell to a freecoaster back wheel with alex triple wall rims and i didn't feel much of a difference. If u are having trouble getting your front wheel up for bunnyhops, my suggestion is to take a link out of ur chain. That is what I did, but not for weight but for manueverability. Leave ur pegs and brakes on, don't be afraid to get barends. Consider the bike weight before u buy that specific model by asking around with ur friends or on the net. In the "pics of our bikes" section(coming soon) you will see my bike. I considered all the aspects of strength, weight, and performance on a bike component before I bought it, everyone else should do the same. Asking around will help you in the long run, believe me.
TIPS
Grips- To get grips on and look cool doing it just spit into the grips then twist on. Make sure to dry excess spit off because that won't look good. Rims- If your rim is a little wobbly, the spokes have to be trued. This means spinning the wheel and looking very carfully where it wobbles. If you see it go out to the left on one part of the rim, tighten the other side until it straightens out. If the wobble is really bad, loosen the spokes on the bad side and tighten the other side. To tighten a spoke just take a spoke wrench and turn clockwise on the inside (under the tube) and counter-clockwise on the outside (the visible side). You can even run 36 spoke rims (like Taj), if you keep your spokes tight and true. Graphics- Stickers are a waste of money. Just cut out a picture or logo out of a magazine and crazy glue it to whichever part of the bike you want it on. Then take some clear nail polish and glaze over it to give it a pro look. Cables- Shorten cables by using a cable cutter or any pliers with a wire cutter. Also, don't be afraid to tape your cables to the frame, fork, or handlebars. Black electrical tape is my favorite but the grey tape will do just fine. You may get heckled for being tape happy but it's worth not getting your foot caught up in a cable. Rainy Days- Yes, everyone gets a rainy day, and it's always a day when you're ready to ride.Just think to yourself, what can you do to make your bike work or look better/smoother/faster? I painted my front spokes black with a marks-a-lot marker last saturday when it rained. The possibilities are endless. Also, go look at each part on your bike and think to yourself if it is slowing you down. Then go look at a mailorder catalog or call your local bike shop to see what kind of a selection they have of that part. Bike videos are a good way to pass the time too. Send in your suggestions!
Q: What the hell is a freecoaster?
A: A freecoaster hub is a rear hub that is different. If you have a freecoaster hub like myself, you can roll backwards without the pedals turning backwards like with a freewheel. When I first got mine I noticed that it had a little bit of a "cushy" feeling, kind of like I was stepping down on a pillow.I quickly got used to this though. A freecoaster allows you to get freecoaster spockets in 14-18 tooth, which is good because you can ride a 14-38 instead of a 16-43 setup. This saves you weight and it is also more manueverable with less metal in the way. Getting a freecoaster means that you can explore the world of fakie tricks with alot more ease than a freewheel.
