Shar is a young Andorian, the equivalent of a human in his early 20s. He has had one prior posting before being assigned to Deep Space Nine. Shar is fairly easy-going, forming close attachments to Ro and several other crewmembers. He is still, however, an Andorian -- meaning that he is quite charged by conflict. Despite the somewhat feminine nature of the picture above, Shar is referred to by the male pronoun throughout the series. It is believed, however, that Shar's sexuality may not be so cut-and-dried. Andorians marry in groups of four, so it's quite possible that Shar's exact gender status may not be comparable with what we would consider "male."

One of Shar's parents is a member of the Federation Council, a fact that Shar tries to keep hidden so as to avoid receiving preferential treatment. Unfortunately for Shar, this fact came to light aboard DS9 in Avatar, Book Two.
