Much of Vaughn's background is a mystery, though he seems to know almost everyone in the higher-ups of Starfleet. He is one of the few people who is able to refer to Admiral Ross by his first name, for instance. Vaughn became part of the DS9 crew after the death of Commander Jast, his predecessor on Deep Space Nine. Though far more experienced than Kira, Vaughn seems comfortable with his role as First Officer. Vaughn is in charge of commanding the Defiant and is fascinated by the opportunity to explore the Gamma Quadrant. After a century full of intrigue and battle, Vaughn is interested in pursuing less violent directions with his life and was even considering retirement before joining DS9.
