I am following up after our brief conversation Monday about student representatives to serve on the Nominating Committee to choose the next Provost.

As you know, under the College's Statutes, the Nominating Committee is appointed by the Board and must include "at least two students nominated by the students". You have asked that the students be allowed to nominate three members and, after consultation with a number of Board members, I agreed to this request.

It seems appropriate that the nominee's include one resident, one non-resident and one Divinity student. These three groups each will have useful perspectives in the choice of the College's leader over the next decade.

The Statutes are silent as to how the student nominations are to be made. I am unfamiliar with the mechanisms of student government, but I think any reasonable and democratic process chosen by you, the elected student Heads, would be appropriate. Because of the importance of the Nominating Committee's work, I think it is important that the nominee's be chosen by as wide a group of the students as can be arranged at this time of year.
