Grandeur Personified
It was constructed in the 17th century by Shah Jahaan in memory of
his wife, Mumtaaz. It took 22 years
to finish this with twenty thousand artisans and labourers
slogging away. Interestingly, some of the labourers were hindus
and they secretly embedded "Aums" in the flower carvings inside! The
illusions at the complex along with the very thought of someone having
undertaken a creative and technical construction of this nature
left me spellbound.
I'm sure Shah Jahaan was one tough task-master of a slave-driver
of a boss! A masterpiece like this has to have people obsessing
with it and is still in the news
(Taj corridor scam for now).
It was pouring by the time we (Pradeep Mama, Keiran, Uncle Druv,
Delicia, Rahul, mummy and I) reached here.
