Webring Guide
Joining a Webring for the First time is hard. Even if we have joined before sometimes it just doesn't look right or for some reason we just don't understand what we did wrong. Well don't worry here is an Easy guide to help you. Even if you don't know HTML you can still join a Webring. Here is some easy steps.
What is a Webring
A Webring is a Group of Sites all linked together. They are usually about the same subject. What ever that subject may be. Or they might just be a collection of Sites. There are many Webrings for different Things. All these Sites are connected by a HTML Code ( Also called a Snippet ) This code connects all the sites in a Circle. When someone is viewing the Webring they can go from site to site by using the Code. By pressing links the Webring will send the person on to the next site and so forth in a Circle. Webrings can bring lots of people to your site. You can have as many webrings as you like to your site. Each Webring has different standards. The Ring Master has the right to refuse or delete your site if they deem it is not in accordance with there Webring. Webrings are owned by individuals who manage them themselves. They are not paid to keep this Ring so remember that when you Contact Ring Masters. You will need to Add the HTML to your site page for it to work. You will also have to keep it on one URL and not remove it unless you no longer wish to be in the Ring. If you change your URL ( Site Address ) you will need to change that information with the Webrings also. Please keep your webring information. Printing them out is recommended.
Before You Join
There is almost always a way to add the HTML Snippet to you page. Almost all editors and Programs that help you to build pages have a way to add the HTML snippet. If you know html then you don't have a problem but if you use an editor or a program such as Front page you will have to find out how you can add the snippet. Look in the Tools, Options section. Also look under Insert or Advanced if you have that Option. If you have looked all through the program or editor and still can't find it go to Help and type in Insert HTML or HTML. If all else fails you can always E-mail the Server and get some help there.
Let's Start
1. When you join a Webring they will always ask you your URL (site address - http://YOUR SITE ADDRESS ) We often make the mistake of putting our Opening page address and then putting the Webring on a Webring page. When you join you must put the URL ( page address ) of the page you are putting the Webring on. If you don't use the same URL (page address) you are breaking the Webring Circle. You will show up as a Broken link in the Webring Manager and the Ring Master may suspend or delete you. It is also not fair to the other members of the Webring. If the Ring is not easy to find for the People surfing then they will not be able to move on to the next site. They will reach a dead end.
2. Save the Webring Logo and upload it to your Site files. This will ensure that the Logo is always showing on your site. NEVER change the name of the Logo. Once you do that you will have to change the name of it in the HTML code. Unless you know HTML WELL and can navigate the code. I suggest you leave it whatever name the Ring owner named it.
3. You will have to Copy and Paste the HTML to place it on your page. Highlight the HTML Code with your mouse. Take your mouse to the Beginning of the code, CLICK AND HOLD the button on your mouse. While still holding the button move over the code until it is all Highlighted. Once Highlighted you can let go of the button and copy the code.
TO COPY you can either PRESS- CTRL + C or right click your mouse and choose COPY. Then go to the area you need to paste the Code into. Click the area and then paste the Code.
TO PASTE you can either PRESS - CTRL + V or right click your mouse and choose PASTE. The code will appear and you are set.
4. Usually you will receive the code in an email ready to put on your site. But in some cases you will have to do some editing to make sure it is correct.
HOW TO EDIT YOUR CODE
Below is an Example of our Webring Code and how you would edit it if necessary. The areas in Purple are the areas you would edit follow the numbers to Guide you. REMEMBER HTML is very Precise you only edit what you see below.
<center> <table border="3" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="340" bgcolor="#EAC7DB" bordercolor="#880000" bordercolorlight="#880000" bordercolordark="#6660B0"> <tr> <td> <p align="center"><img border="0" src="1.WingedLogo.gif"></p> <center><b><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2"><a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;id=2.***SITE ID***;action=prev5"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Previous 5 Sites</a> | <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;id=2.***SITE ID***;action=sprev"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Skip Previous</a> | <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;id=2.***SITE ID***;action=prev"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Previous</a> | <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;id=2.***SITE ID***;action=next"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Next</a> ]</font></b> <P> <b><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2"> <a href="http://100megspop2.com/trippleangel/index.html"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Angels Angels Angels</a> <br>Net Ring owned by <a href="mailto:3.***SITE EMAIL***"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">4.***SITE TITLE***</a>.<br> </font> <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;action=addform"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Join Us</font></a></b> <P> <b><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2"> [ <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;id=2.***SITE ID***;action=skip"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Skip Next</a> | <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;id=2.***SITE ID***;action=next5"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Next 5 Sites</a> | <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;action=rand"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">Random Site</a> | <a href="http://www.ringsurf.com/netring?ring=trippleangels;action=list"><font color="#6660B0" face="Book Antiqua" size="2">List Sites</a> ]</font></b> </td> </tr> </table> </center> |
1.WingedLogo.gif
This will be the hardest part. Once you load the Webring logo into your Site files you must put the location of the file in this section. The easiest way to find out the location of the file is to click on it after you have uploaded it. It will appear in a browser. All you will have to do then is Copy the URL ( PAGE ADDRESS ) in the browser, then Paste that URL ( PAGE ADDRESS ) into this section of the code. REMEMBER DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE LOGO 2.***SITE ID*** In your Webring E-mail you will find your Site ID. Usually it will be a number. Erase what is above and Put that number in it's place. 3.***SITE EMAIL*** You would erase the above and put in your E-mail address 4.***SITE TITLE*** You would erase the above and put in the name of your site
Only remove what you see in blue. The rest is part of the code and if you remove any other part you might cause the code to mess up. |
Hope this has helped you. If all else fails you can contact your Ring Master. If they cant help you can contact me LuvRaqui. I will try to help you if possible
