John Merten, 84, of Sauk Centre, died Jan. 27, 1982. He was buried Saturday, Jan. 30, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church with the Rev. Victor Kinzer officiating. Interment was at St. Alexius Cemetery in West Union.

Mr. Merten was born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Merten Oct. 21, 1897, in St. Joseph, Minn. He married Mary Dusek on April 12, 1919, at Sauk Centre. Until 1960, he farmed near West Union. He moved to Sauk Centre and was employed as a carpenter until he retired in 1976.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Church and a member of the St. Joseph's Society in West Union.

Survivors include his wife; son, Anthony Merten of Sauk Centre; daughter, Mrs. Bernard (Margaret) Rutten of Carlos, Minn.; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Jr.; his parents; four brothers and three sisters.

Pallbearers were Dale, Mike, and David Rutten; and Ronald, Jerry, and Roger Rutten. Kenneth Merten was crossbearer.

Honorary pallbearers were Clarence and Al Trisko, Ed Schramel, Tony Haskamp, Gene Meyer, Joe Lass, Bill Fritzler, Adolph Ebensteiner, Norb Jager and Albert Quistorff.
