Candice's Comeback: Should Beth be Worried?

Candice has come a long way since her early days as a glorified backstage bit of T & A. She was a reject from one of the many Diva Search competitions, probably originally picked up because she looked good and could string a couple of sentences together. Unsurprisingly she was used backstage for a while as a 'make-up artist' and then later became a personality in her own right becoming involved in storylines, albeit briefly, with established talent such as Batista and Stacy Keibler. At this stage it seemed clear that Candice had no intention of stepping into the ring to wrestle.

As Candice's stay in the WWE wore on, she became increasingly involved in storylines with Torrie Wilson and Victoria. Often she would just stand at ringside and periodically interfere in a match to help Victoria. Of the three, Candice was clearly the least experienced and made Torrie look like a pro.

Eventually the storyline turned sour and Candice turned on Torrie on one episode of RAW. Rather than just a simple slap and a bit of hair-pulling to reinforce the point, Candice delivered a previously (and since) unused forward Russian leg sweep that was both unexpected and very effective. This seemed to mark a change in Candice's attitude to wrestling, but a subsequent appearance in a wet and wild match cast doubt on this.

The match pitted Torrie and Candice against each other in a glorified water-fight which saw Torrie eventually gain the upper hand. Both Divas wore tight-fitting white vest tops, which although nice to look at, also clearly displayed the weight Candice had begun to put on around her midriff. For a girl that had previously been a fitness model and had maintained a slim but slightly rounded figure, this was not a good sign. It seemed to suggest that Candice had allowed her training to take a backseat, and with it presumably any attempts to be taken seriously as a wrestler.

Over the following months Candice clearly began to work hard and any excess weight was soon shed. It also became apparent that Candice was beginning to seriously train and increasingly she began to take a more active role in the ring. She seemed to be going from strength to strength until she was booked in matches against Lita shortly before her departure. In an effort to let Lita go out on a high, Candice was thrown around the ring and hardly allowed to get a single move in. At first it wasn't clear whether Candice's seeming improvements had been nothing more than a flash in the pan, or had simply been stalled by Lita's departure from the WWE.

Any doubts were soon dismissed when an incredible looking Candice took on Victoria in singles action on an episode of Sunday Night Heat. Candice looked leaner and meaner than ever before and was also packing an impressive repertoire of moves that took me and I imagine a lot of other people by surprise. Over the following months Candice continued to impress and seemed to utilise a new move on an almost weekly basis. It was now clear that Candice was making a serious effort to become a wrestler and had surpassed the likes of Torrie Wilson, a previous stable mate who had been in the wrestling industry far longer.

Candice's efforts clearly hadn't only been noticed by the fans, but also those backstage as in 2007 she embarked on a serious challenge to Melina's reign as Women's Champion. Looking back it was hard to believe that in the course of only two and a half years Candice had gone from being yet another bit of T & A to a real and deserving challenger to the Women's Title. Only Trish Stratus has achieved a similar feat in recent times winning the belt for the first time after only a year with the company. Considering that Trish went on to hold the title more times than any other Diva in the WWE's history, there's the real chance that Candice may follow in her footsteps and hold the title on a few more occasions before she leaves the company.

Considering all of this and with Candice's imminent return from a shoulder injury she suffered in a match against her nemesis Beth, it is likely that when she returns she’ll make a real impact on the division.

The magnitude of her comeback is unlikely to be on a par with Beth's devastating arrival to the company, partially because Candice lacks the sheer brute force that the Glamazon possesses, but also because Candice has probably been unable to train for the last few months and may well be a little rusty in the ring. But we shouldn’t underestimate Candice’s desire to exact some payback on Beth who was responsible for knocking her off the top rope resulting in the injury that sidelined her. In addition to this Candice is going to be hungry to reclaim the title she lost to Beth. With Mickie James also aggressively pursuing Beth’s title, Candice will either have to take on both Mickie and Beth or if she is more cunning, team with Mickie for a time to make taking Beth’s title all the easier.

Either way with Mickie slowly upping her game to takedown Beth and with Candice due back shortly it is almost certain that the title will be changing hands soon and there is every danger that Candice will be the one wearing it around her waist.
