CHAPTER FOUR:
**** PREVENTERS' HEADQUARTERS(A year later)
Lady Une made a small sigh of resignment as she picked up another
document on her desk. She and the others have to plow through a bundle
of documents before the day is over just to assist Deputy Prime
Minister Dorlian with her wedding preparations. 'The sacrifice we
make.' She sighed as she signed another document.
"Lady Une." Her secretary buzzed her. "There's a letter for you."
"And why do you have to tell me that? You could have left it with
my mail." She fumed, irritated with the interruption. But the next few
words were enough to chill her to the bones.
-
Milliard glared at the huge heap of papers on his desk. He should
have realized that the Department of Foreign Affairs would dump all
this work to all of the Preventers in the headquarters so that the
staff could just prepare for Relena's wedding. But he's thankful enough
that she is to marry not Heero, but Allan Thrope, one of the richest
men in the world. He made a low growl and tackled the work.
"Milliard?" Noin knocked before peeking in. Milliard looked up
and smiled when he caught sight of her.
"Hi, Noin. I thought Relena was letting you run around town for
flowers." He winked at his beloved as she entered his office.
"Hahaha. Not funny, Milliard." She playfully punched his arm
before becoming serious all together again. "Une had me called back. It
seems that she received a rather disturbing letter."
"From who? Her secret admirer?" Milliard joked. Noin glared at
him stonily before continuing. "It was from a secret army called
Mediators. Now, I believe that it scared her up to the point that she
had Sally fly down back here from Alaska."
"It is serious." Milliard frowned. "Just barely a week before
Relena's wedding and they contact us."
"Probably that's what scared, Une." Their eyes connected to each
other.
"Yo, guys!" They both turned and saw Duo peeking from the half-
open door. "Lady Une is calling us."
Noin nodded as Milliard stood up from his seat.
-
Lady Une reread the letter for the last time before handing it to
Noin. "I received that letter earlier this morning. It was delievered
through a messenger. Now, for the past few months, we've been aware of
activities in the Colony Clusters but so far, we had no proof." She
studied the eight people assembled in her office. "It was written in
that letter that this secret army called Mediators were responsible for
the activities."
"So who was it that wrote us?" Milliard asked her. "The leader of
the supervising council of Mediators, General Thompson Yates."
**** MEDIATORS' BASE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TOKYO AND KYOTO (A few hours after the meeting)
Isis made a careful note on her checklist before proceeding to
the next Mobile Suit. She and the others have to make sure that all of
their Mobile Suits were in top shape just in case the Preventers
decided to attack them. And that is a big "if." She just found out from
the Council that they had General Yates contact the Preventers. They
wanted a merger with them.
'Why can't they just leave the Preventers alone?' She looked out
of the hold. She could see Lilliane hollering at one of the mechanics
for not doing his job well.
-
Lilliane stomped away from the crying mechanic. She knew that
everyone in their army was aware that they had to keep their work the
best and that mechanic was reckless.
'I'm going to send that guy to Mars if he does not shape up.' She
thought as she entered the Mobile Suits hold. She immediately climbed
up to the catwalks using the support beams as ladders.
"How's everything?" She asked Loise, the head mechanic of the
base, when she landed beside one of the Junos.
"So far, we have replaced all the loose and old bolts, fixed the
faulty circuitry and replenished the batteries." Lieutenant Loise Hanes
checked her list. "We're going to call on the test pilots next to have
everything tested."
"Good." Lilliane patted her shoulder. "It's good to have someone
like you in the division."
"Thank you, Colonel." Loise smiled. Not so far from them, a
brunette was quietly watching them.
-
'Here we ago again.' Kristine sighed before entering the
monitoring room of the hold. She checked all indicators for any
problems. It is her work as the systems' head officer to make sure that
all of the Mobile Suits had their systems intact and working. She had
the computers make another run before packing up a laptop and
proceeding to the first Mobile Suit Juno. It was not she believe the
results that the computers gave her but it makes her feel better if she
sees them with her own eyes. She immediately attached cords from the
cockpit to the laptop and turned on the laptop. As always the program
starts showing the blueprints of the Mobile Suit before the wire model
then finally the system. She and the others worked on the designs of
the Mediators' Mobile Suits but it was Makoto's job to ensure that
every last one of them returned to their own respective bases. A strong
whirl of a nearby supercomputer made her look up and smile. Makoto was
inside the monitoring room, checking on all of the Mobile Suits in
their base and the other bases in the world.
-
Makoto made a low grunt as the computer sent another barrage of
disarranged data into her virtual environment. A slight flick of a
finger and small nod quickly arranged the data.
"Two Gibbous down in North Atlantic. One Juno under repair in
Phoenix." She dictated to the four technicians monitoring her. "The
rest are in their respective holds."
Makoto didn't really prefer working on the monitoring but
everyone had their own jobs to do. Isis was responsible for everything
that was occuring within their division, Lilliane was in-charge with
the maintenance of the Mobile Suits, Kristine with the systems and
Elaine with the physical and psychological health of the pilots.
"Tell Commander Bates to have the pilots of the two down Gibbous
to be found." She uttered.
-
Elaine frowned slightly as she inspected the bunks of the pilots
of the Alpha Team. She could see that all of their properties were
properly kept. Even, the ones with assignments.
"Good work, Captain Giles." She faced the blond-haired guy. "You may return to your work.
-
Isis glanced at the people seated on the conference table with
her.
"As of 0900 of today, the Preventers Headquarters received a
letter from our superiors. The Council wants the Mediators to merge
with the Preventers and this means that all attacks or schemes against
Deputy Prime Minister Relena Dorlian are to be suspended
indefinitely." General Yates kept his face check. "For the Preventers
not to be doubtful of this merger, the team assembled here now will be
sent to Tokyo handle the negotiations. Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir!" Lilliane, Makoto, Isis, Elaine and Kristine snapped.
