By creating your own lyric library you can allmost be sure you´ll find tips and ideas you can use to improve your songs or write new ones quicker. But before we start create this library i want to explain what a lyric library is and what it can do for you and your songwriting.
A lyric library is a collection of notebooks/papers filled with lyric ideas. These ideas can be everything from song titles, small phrases, words, half written songs, poems,an idea for a song or anything else you can come up with.So everytime you get stuck or need an idea or two to get started you can take a look there and start writing a song alot faster then you normally would do.
It´s easy to create a lyric library and it´s amazing how much it helps. If you want to create your own lyric library or you want some ideas on how to expand it read on.
Obivious you´ll need a pen and some paper.Small notebooks works best since they are easy to take with you anywhere you go.Ofcourse you can write down your ideas other places too(on your computer,in your diary and so on..).But try to keep your ideas on specific places or else you may lose your ideas.I suggest you get yourself atleast 3 books. One book for words and song titles.Another one for small phrases, half written songs and poems. The third book is for anything else. You should take this book with you anywhere you go any everytime you come up with anything write it down there.
In the first book you can write down allsorts of words and possible song titles you come up with.Open the book and start writing as many words you can think of for about 1 minute and don´t stop writing before that minute is over. What kind words you write down is´nt important as long as you keep writing. As an example i will write down a few words just to show you how easy this really is.
Time,Mountain,Sea,tea,People,Food,Internet,Tired,Music, and so on.When you are done you´ll have lots of words in you book and you´ll be ready for the next step.
What you should do now is simple pick one or more of these words and write about it in your second book (the one with small phrases, half written songs and poems). It does´nt have to be much but the more you write the better.Let me show you a few examples.Lets start with the word food...
"You eat when you´re hungry and need food to survive. Some people can choose what to eat while other people can not. Many people trow away food while thuosands of people die because of hunger every year".
Now when we have written something about it we can try to write a lyrical phrase about it like this:
"The hunger is getting stronger and the young girl is getting weak. But tomorrow it will all be over it´s the last time she will sleep".
Now lets pick another word. This time we will use the word mountain:
"The air up in the mountain is clean and fresh. If you listen carefully you can hear the sound of nature (The wind, waterfalls, birds, animals)".
With all this in mind we can write another lyrical phrase.
"Up in the mountains the air is so clean.Birds they are singing with voices so clear".
Write down as much as possible without judging yourself. Remember this is your ideas not your finished songs.
In your third book you can write down whatever you want. This is a book you should take with you anywhere you go and write down anything you come up with. Here´s a few examples:
You are on your way home and you have to take the bus.You see the bus standing on the other side of the street so you run as fast as you can.But when you get there the bus is gone. And while you are stand there the rain start falling down. What do you do?How do you feel?
Write about it in your book. This can be a song someday. Here´s another bus example:
You´re sitting in the bus and you notice that a person in front of you talks allot of shit about someone called Max.A few minutes later Max comes in the bus and suddenly this person say lots of nice things about him.We all know that it´s not nice to listen to private conversations. But it´s not nice to talk shit about people behind their backs eigther.Anyway this could possible be a lyric to one of your songs so write about it.If you have the guts you can tell Max what you heard and your song would really be interesting...
To get the most out of these books you´ll have to have lots of ideas in them.Try to add something new to your library as often as possible that way you can almost be sure to find some tips and ideas for your song.
Well that´s all for now.Hopefully you have found some useful information in this songwriting article. If you want to read more songwriting articles by me check out:
