On June 23, 1996, 32 boys, four leaders, and several parents set out
on the trek to Slippery Falls Scout Ranch near Tishomingo, Oklahoma. The
temperature was HOT!, but the excitement was equally high. Upon arrival
at our camp site at W-F Connected (The furthest site from the mess hall!),
the boys had swim
checks and settled in for a great, if HOT, week. The first night's campfire
(sans fire because of the extreem fire danger) was great. It was put on
by the staff of the Last Frontier Council camp and included manyu tips
about camp life.
The next day, the twelve new boysheaded
off to Eagle Trail where hey spentmot of the week working on the Tenderfoot,
Second Class, or First Class requirements. The rest of the troop started
merit badge classes. Eagle Trail was great and the boys accomplised a lot
and enhoyed the classes headed by an Eagle Scout named Rick who is now
in Stillwater attending classes at Oklahoma State University. Merit badge
classes included sailing, environmental sciences, swimming, wood carving
and a host of others.
Various special activities were planned by the camp staff. On Tuesday (June 25) we celebrated "Christmas in Hume." Thursday was Toga Day, and Friday saw a Bar-B-Q for parents and the closing campfire. All of the camp activities were overseen by the head councilor affectionately know as the "Gazebo God" because he made all of his anouncements (including the order in which the various troops could go to meals) from the camp gazebo.
With out a doubt the most exciting activity of the week was the volleyball
tournament.Why?
BECAUSE WE WON!!! This was a great improvement over last year when t troop
did not score a single point in the entire tournament.
Saturday brought a Court of Honor to award merit badges and the reture to Stillwater. It was a great, if HOT, week and all seem to be looking forward to the 1997 camp at the Will Rogers Scout Ranch.
