This summer six boys and three dads went on a 50 mile, eight day backpacking trip in New Mexico. They left Stillwater at 7:00 in the morning and spent a day driving. We stopped off in Philmont. The next day, we stayed in camp at Tres Ritos exhausting every possible card game. The area was very mountainous and we were constantly gaining and loosing altitude. Our dreams came true the second day when while in our shorts and T-shirts, we were able to slide in the snow in the middle of July. This day (#2), we camped up above the tree line. The next day, we spent climbing around mountains. When we stopped to let every one catch up, we saw big-horned sheep. After we did that, we decided to go right over the top of Santa Barbara Peak instead of going around it! We ate lunch at the fork in the road where we took our classic picture with the Stillwater News Press. The rest of the time was fairly easy hiking. We came back into base camp and most went immediately into the warm showers. The trip home was fairly easy except we had a couple of cars that had trouble and arrived back home at about 3:30 the next morning. A great time was had by all and everyone eligible is encourage to try it next year!
