Philmont Scout Ranch Expeditions
2001 - 2000 - 1999 Itinerary Cross Reference
and Comparison Summary TableCourtesy of Troop 116, Charlotte, NC
This Cross Reference Summary shows comparisons between 2001, 2000, and 1999 Expedition itineraries by indicating several highlight features for each. It is presented to assist crews in selecting itineraries and to assist veteran Philmont campers who have become familiar with the Expedition itinerary numbers and routes. All information is from the (a) Treks 2001 Itinerary Guide, (b) Treks - 2000 Itinerary Guide, and (c) 1999 Advisors Guidebook & Philmont Itineraries PEAKS books.
In 2001, one major change and a large number of minor changes have been made to the itineraries. In 2000, Philmont did a major overhaul. Though all of the 1999 itineraries were preserved with similar routings, almost every itinerary was given a new number in 2000. The objectives of this major overhaul in 2000 were as follows:
- Have the itinerary number system correspond to the ratings. As the number increases the rating increases from Typical (#1-14), to Rugged (#15-23), to Strenuous (#24-30), to Super Strenuous (#31-35).
- Accomodate eight new itineraries added since 1997.
- Use new technology to reflect true mileage more accurately. Over the years some routes had changed due to new trails.
- Modify itineraries to avoid camping above 9000 feet until after the 3rd day. This is expected to help campers acclimate better and reduce problems.
To see the individual itinerary listings, click on the itinerary number. Note the following cautions about the Treks 2001 Itinerary Guide map and profile chart pages. In 11 cases (# 2, 12, 17, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 33, 34, 35) these pages have not been updated from 2000 to match the 2001 itinerary changes. In at least 3 other cases (# 9, 19, 26) the green line on the map may not be the best route to follow. Crews should always (a) use the Philmont topo maps for planning their routes and (b) discuss the route options during their briefing at Logistics upon arrival.
Here are a few other significant discoveries. (1) In 2001, there is only one major change: #13 is now a South & Central trek - last year it went to the North & Valle. (2) Trail camp usage seems to have increased - 10 treks have 1 more trail camp in the itinerary, 2 treks have 2 more, and only 1 trek has fewer - 1 (that's #13 which completely changed). (3) There appears to be one significant error: #27 map and profile chart were not updated in the 2001 book to correspond with the itinerary changes in the Valle.
Rick Nobles pointed out an apparent error in the 2001 Treks book for #28. The green line on the map doesn't match with Black Jack's camp on Day 8. It still appears to show Head of Dean (where #28 went in 2000), and that's a fairly big difference for the route on that day.
Note from Al Thomson, Troop 236, Schooley's Mountain, NJ:
I also have noted that the mileage/elevation charts have not all been updated for the changes in the itineraries. In addition to days 4,5,6, and 7 for Trek #27, there are significant differences for Trek #9 (days 9, 10 and 11), Trek #26 (the 19 mile day 9 discussed last week), and Trek #28 (days 8 and 9). And others of less significance, some of which were in the TREKS 2000 book as well. Thanks to folks like Rick and Al I discovered that in 11 cases (#2, 12, 17, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 33, 34, 35) these pages have not been updated from 2000 to match the 2001 itinerary changes. In at least 3 other cases (#9, 19, 26) the green line on the map may not be the best route to follow.
Crews should always (a) use the Philmont topo maps for planning their routes and (b) discuss the route options during their briefing at Logistics upon arrival.
My Cross Reference charts have been updated to include these cautionary notes.
