2. The Toys of Time While traveling in the TARDIS, the Doctor finds out more about Bradford and Chelle on a personal level. He discovers that they both have knowledge of computer systems, although Bradford is far more advanced. He also discovers the Chelle has a quick mind and at times is argumentative towards the Doctor. He instructs them on the TARDIS’ computer systems and how coordinates are set. The Doctor then begins to set new coordinates but notices that the TARDIS is failing to receive his requests. He soon comes to notice that they are being sucked by a beam towards a ship close to their position. When the TARDIS materializes on board, Bradford and Chelle notice that the inside of the ship looks very child-like to them. The Doctor agrees but tells them both that they must go out to find why they’ve been sucked on board and must find a way to break the beam’s control on the ship. As they explore around the ship they see a lot of dates on the walls inscribed on toy blocks. They all find it curious, and eventually they make their way to what appears to be the control area of the ship. As the door opens they are welcomed and introduced to three alien robotic beings who look toy-like. Their names are revealed as Tinker, Playful and Action and they explain to the Doctor they travel through time in search of events or places or people that will provide them amusement. Without it, they see no purpose for existing. When Bradford asks why they pulled the TARDIS to this ship, Tinker tells him that they hope that they will be amusing company and that’s why they are there. When Chelle asks what will happen if they’re not as amusing as they hope, Action tells her that they will be free to leave. When the Doctor asks if they have a choice to stay or leave, Action tells the Doctor that he hopes they stay for a while and be amusing company. The three are then dismissed to a prepared room by Playful, and he promises that he will back later to bring them back to the controls room. The Doctor pulls out a tee from his hat when he takes it off and finds a way to pick the lock on the door. He instructs his companions to stay put. When they ask what he’s doing, he explains that something about this situation seems very wrong and he’s going to find out what it is so they can free the TARDIS and get out of here. Meanwhile back at the control room, Tinker suggests that the Doctor as a Time-Lord will not be in a mood for games. He then decides that they will get their amusement by going back into time and going to the point of Chelle’s birth and changing the course of history so that she would never have been born or existed. The Doctor meanwhile overhears the conversation from the outside and immediately returns back to the quarters and informs Chelle and Bradford that these “toys” go through time altering history and that’s what they get their amusement from. He then tells Chelle that she is the target of their fun and tells her about the plan to change history by making sure she never was born and thus wouldn’t exist. Chelle becomes frantic and rushes out to the control room looking to extract revenge and prevent this from happening. The Doctor and Bradford try to flag her down but it is too late. They soon arrive at the control room and find that Chelle has been taken prisoner by the three toys. The Doctor then pleads with them to stop what they’re doing because it’s sadistic. Tinker tells the Doctor that this is their life and he cannot do a thing to stop this. They then restrain Bradford and the Doctor in a corner away from Chelle. As they prepare to end Chelle’s existence, she starts screaming and is eventually gagged by Action. As Bradford watches the toys set up for their plan, he pleads to the Doctor to find a way out of this. The Doctor then thinks of a way he can either stall for time or even get out of trouble. He calls Tinker over and tells him that if they like amusement so much, they must also like games. Tinker agrees with the Doctor to which the Doctor says that the toys think they have superior minds to theirs. Tinker also agrees, to which the Doctor offers him a challenge of superior minds. He offers that he will set up a game to match Tinker’s mind with that of Chelle’s. If Tinker wins the game then they can go ahead with their plans, and if Chelle wins the game then they will go free and the plans will cease. Tinker agrees to it and Chelle is released. The Doctor then sets up the game which is a mind puzzle/riddle. Tinker is given the chance to go first and solve it, but he can’t. Chelle then manages to solve it right away which angers all three toys. Tinker then pulls out a gun to kill Chelle, but the Doctor pulls the tee from his hat and hits Tinker in the eye causing him to fire at the controls and kill his friends Playful and Action. As the ship begins to head towards destruction, the Doctor makes sure that the beam has lost control over the TARDIS so they can leave. When it is confirmed he grabs his tee back and lead his companions through the crumbling ship back to the TARDIS and they dematerialize off the ship as it is destroyed. When Chelle thanks the Doctor for saving her life, she asks the Doctor why she beat a intelligent robot. The Doctor explains that the puzzle was a very primitive one at best, and way too primitive for the mind of Tinker. When Bradford comments on the genius plan, the Doctor says that he will take a primitive mind in his game over a machine any day of the week.
3. The Virus The Doctor, Bradford and Chelle look to be on their way to a restful holiday when the TARDIS gets an emergency distress call from a planet called Ronder. The Doctor, to the disappointment of his companions, decides that he will reset the coordinates to answer and give whatever help he can. When Chelle asks what kind of help, the Doctor responds by saying it depends on the situation. The TARDIS materializes on Ronder and Bradford and Chelle are amazed at how futuristic this new world is when they step outside. The Doctor looks around for someone that might have been the one who sent the signal. When the three make it into the capital city, he meets a young woman named Kari who informs the Doctor that she was the one responsible for the distress signal. When the Doctor wonders what she needs his help for, she explains to him that the race of Rondarian people are dying off thanks to a virus which attacks the brains of these people. Bradford asks what kind of a virus, to which Kari responds a computer virus called COSC-439. She explains to Bradford and Chelle that they might look like normal human beings, but their brains and organs are made of metals and electronics. When the Doctor asks how the virus is contracted, she says it is from using their computer technology and the virus attacks the computer chip in their heads which serves as the brain for Ronderians When the Doctor asks if Kari is also infected, she replies that she is and that is why she called for the Doctor. Chelle asks what can they do. Kari responds that there are two ways to combat the virus. One is to break into the computer system to shut them all down to at least stop the spread of the virus to more people. The second way is to find an evil renegade of the Ronderian race named Parris who has found the cure to the anti-virus, but has fled to the mountains overlooking the capital city and will not come back until he sees the race reduced to minimal numbers. The Doctor thinks that Parris is out for revenge against someone. Kari explains that he’s out to inflict punishment on those who allowed COSC-439 in the computer system to be tested on him first since he was a political prisoner at the time. The Doctor then decides that the efforts have to be split up on this assignment. He instructs Bradford and Chelle to stay behind in the control center and try to find any way that the virus can be stopped or reprogrammed out of the computer systems so that no one else becomes infected. He tells Kari that she must come to the mountains with him to find Parris and try and reason with him that this is not the way to solve his problems. With that, Kari and the Doctor set off for the mountains overlooking the city. Bradford and Chelle begin their long task of finding any way to stop COSC-439. As the Doctor and Kari progress forward, Kari becomes very weak and can’t keep up the pace as the virus is slowly weakening her body. The Doctor keeps her going as they reach the entrance to what looks like Parris’ hideout. From a cliff Parris notices the Doctor and Kari and comes down to meet them. When he finds Kari in bad shape he asks her if she has also contracted the virus. She confirms it and begs him to come back so that the anti-virus can be spread. When he refuses, the Doctor begins to get in his face and tells him that killing off an entire race of people for the sake of avenging his own pain isn’t fair to those who had nothing to do with it. Parris says that it is not going to change his mind, and he wants to watch Kari die here in front of his own eyes. When the Doctor asks what she ever did to deserve it, Kari tells the story that the two of them were in love before he was taken as a political prisoner during the period of unrest. She abandoned him and let his captors expose him to COSC-439 without trying to save him. So she believes that his pride has turned him into pure evil to wish for her death. Parris agrees that she lead him to find the anti-virus and take it away so that all would die and he would be left to take the anti-virus and gain his revenge over the Ronderian race. The Doctor is shocked of these events and can only watch in terror as Kari slowly begins to fade. As he tries to help her, Parris pulls him inside the mountains and holds him off so she is isolated as she heads into her final moments of life. Meanwhile back at the capital city, Bradford and Chelle are becoming more and more frustrated in trying to solve the virus. As they see more and more Ronderians being infected and dying they panic that they will have to be dependent on what the Doctor can do with Parris. As they keep cracking at it, Chelle finds a possible loop that, if broken, would kill off COSC-439 from all computer systems. When Bradford goes into the system and programs the loop out of the system, they are excited to see that they have held off the virus for no one else to be infected. They now hope that the Doctor can get the anti-virus to save those already infected and not dead. On the mountain, Kari slowly slips away and she dies in front of Parris as he wishes her to hell for what she did to him. The Doctor having enough of this situation, breaks out of his restraints and attacks Parris for the anti-virus. The two battle around the cliff of the mountain. In an exchange, Parris get too close to the edge and is forced off by the Doctor. When the Doctor comes down to where Parris’ body lies, he finds him dead, but sees that the anti-virus chip is still in tact. He takes it from Parris and returns back to the capital city. The Doctor meets up with Bradford and Chelle and the three spread the anti-virus to cure those who still are alive. Bradford tells the Doctor that they got the virus under control, but asks what happened to Kari. The Doctor explains that she died because of a man reduced to evil deeds to avenge his past. But she would be grateful for all they had done. The Doctor programs the anti-virus chip into the system and is thanked by the survivors for saving the Ronderian race. The Doctor hopes that the race will prosper and that he was pleased to help. As they board the TARDIS, the Doctor wishes that Kari had been given the chance to be reborn as well in the new Ronderian race.
