Getting the job
I drove by the Sierra Highway Express yard, on my way to work at DEF every week. When I quit DEF I needed a job. SHX aslo had a continual add in the Fresno Bee so I went in there one day and asked about a driving job. I told them what happened at DEF.

They asked me what I needed from them as an employer. I explained that I needed to run in  California only until my son is born.  I want to be within a few hours of the house at all times so I can hurry home and be there with my wife when it is time. Then I need a couple days off to take care of her, and then I would be free to go anywhere in the country and would be willing to be gone for up to two weeks at a time. They agreed and hired me under those conditions.

My Job Description
This company hauled all sorts of things, mostly Walgreens stuff from the warehouse in Woodland CA to Walgreen stores all over the country. There is another Walgreens warehouse in Indiana. I would often deliver and pick up loads there. In the Christmas season we picked up Christmas trees in Oregon, and took them to Southern Ca, or South Texas.

The Good Points
The dispatchers were also the owners, and they were easy to deal with. Home time was not a problem. It was a small company and everything was on a first name basis.

The Bad Points
They had a small fleet of used Cal Ark cabovers for us to drive. I have never liked cab overs. The pay was below normal and there were no health benefits.

Why I Stopped Working There.
I was a new dad, and needed to get serious about health benefits. The frieght was slowing down and I was doing alot of sitting and not getting paid very much. I had to move on. I did like working for these people and they did understand that I had a family to support. I left to take a job to get benefits and make more money. We parted on good terms and they offered for me to come back whenever I wanted.
